Reccomend new metal bands for an old rocker please!

Well, decided to get back into my music, trouble is I'm out of touch with the current metal scene. Any of you whipper-snappers out there recomend who is good at the mo. If it helps I was into Scorpions, Accept, Metallica, and 'slightly' older bands like Led Zep, Deep P, get the idea.

Give me some ideas to go look at/listen to.
Cheers

Radio 1 have been playing Wolfmother quite a bit, an Australian rock combo. Their stuff has been described as "Sabbathesque".

Might be worth a try.

Try

High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings (Motorhead meets Metallica)
Trivium-Ascendency (Iron Maiden meets Metallica)
System of A Down -Toxicity (Eastern tinged Metallica)
Tool-Aenima or Lateralus (progressive metallica)
Deftones-White Pony (as above maybe slightly more Faith No more)
Machine Head-Burn My Eyes (industrial Metallica)
Slayer-Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven (Makes Metallica sound like a pop band, the finest in thrash)
Mastodon-Leviathon (After System of A down its the second band where you have to meet monster vocals, be prepared)
Sixth-The trees are dead (like the above, but more complex time signatures and British too. Drummers dont get more robot than this guy).

Try them out, most will take some time to sink in so do not expect a couple of spins to take them into your heart, more like 6 or 7. Metal has become far more sophisticated these days.

then theres a few older bands that are worth following up

Pearl Jam -Ten(hard rock)
Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger (hard rock)
Alice in Chains-Dirt (hard rock)
Tad-Inhaler (iron Maiden meets Sabbath)
The Melvins-Houdini (slow Sabbath style)
Nirvana -Nevermind (Im guessing you do know this one, otherwise where have you been for the last 10 years??)

Three Inches Of Blood - Thrashy metal with an eighties feel to it. Dual vocals, one gruff and one high pitched. I would have thought being a fan of Accept and Metallica (two bands I loved in the 80's) this would be up your street as it's a bit like a cross between the two.

EDIT: I just stumbled across this:

The best way to describe 3 Inches of Blood is "reverential" - essentially, take everything great about heavy music before 1985, and go from there. Which means the shrieking vocal assault of Rob Halford, the epic guitars and storytelling of Iron Maiden, the pirate theme of Running Wild, and, most importantly, the lasting influence of the British New Wave of Heavy Metal. 3 Inches of Blood is a band that knows their Diamond Head from their Motorhead.

"That's definitely our biggest influence, the late 70's British stuff," says one of 3 Inches' two singers, Jamie Hooper. "And also bands that were influenced by those U.K. bands, like early Slayer, and Ride the Lightning-era Metallica." On the other hand, singer Cam Pipes asserts, "3 Inches of Blood are influenced by barley, hops, yeast, and water and heavy metal!"

You can hear them here: http://flashenhanced.com/3iob/3iob.htm

http://www.3inchesofblood.com/

Wolfmother - I only just heard them the other day but I'm sure this album is a must for old Led Zep/Sabbath fans that are looking for something with a more direct influence than a lot of the curent bands.

I can't say I'm much of a fan of the bands on Karkus30's list except for Tad who were a great if underated band. I would personally go for an album called '8 Way Santa' though. Slayer are of course also fantastic but I would assume you remember them from back in the day if you remember Metallica from then.

If you fancy something slightly off the beaten track, try Beatallica (Metallica meets the Beatles). Free mp3 downloads from their website

Speaking as a fellow Deep Purple/Led Zep/Sabs nut (I have over 50 DP CD's alone !), I'd recommend

Tool - Lateralus and Aenima are outstanding.
Clutch - Pure Rock Fury - does exactly what it says on the tin !

Good call with Clutch. I suppose we should also add Primus, Helmet and Pantera and for afters how about The Black Crows.

Just as an added comment, these albums do not necessarily represent my tastes in music, they are just suggestions which revolve around the subject of the thread and may be worth a listen.

Check out a new band from Ireland by the name of The Answer. I'm not gonna pigeon-hole them as there are a lot of influences in their music, but they have a great 70's rock sound, think Burn-era Deep Purple and Led Zep. There's also a good new brit band called Roadstar (used to be called Hurricane Party). Great energetic band. The whole music scene is in a bit of a stale rut at the moment, IMO, hence all the great 80's bands, Poison, Journey, Cinderella, Queensryche, Anthrax are touring and are a lot more fun to watch and listen too than all this modern neo-thrash stuff! Why not check out Classic Rock magazine for a quick snifter on what is happening in the rock world.

As mentioned before, you should definitely check out Tool (Ænima, Lateralus probably easiest to get into) and System of a Down (I loved the recent Mesmerize album).

Also check out Devin Townsend and his various bands; Strapping Young Lad (very hard & thrashy), Ocean Machine (more chilled with big riffs), Infinity (bit experimental) and various under just Devin Townsend. Started out with Steve Vai way back, now very good, very tight/precise timing, amazing dynamics to his vocals. Brilliant live!

Velvet Revolver and the album Contraband ain't too bad: GnR minus Axle and with LA Guns bloke on vocals. Harking back to '80s metal, but not sounding jaded.

The whole stoner-metal scene was pretty good for spaced out big dirty guitar riffs, covering the likes of Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age (before they went too Indie), Clutch, Unida, Monster Magnet (get 'Dopes To Infinity') etc.

Also check out some of the stuff that crossed over into the Industrial scene (or even just the less electronic stuff in the industrial scene), like Fear Factory, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy ('Greater Right of the Wrong' good to get into), KMFDM, Rammstein, Die Krupps, Ministry (can't beat 'Psalm 69')

I'll also suggest Tool - As well as the 2 albums already mentioned, 'Undertow' may be a good bet. Shorter songs with more straightforward structures and therefore (arguably) easier to get into than the later releases.

Faith No More - The Real Thing (contains a great cover of War Pigs), and Angel Dust.

Ok, these are hardly recent (early 90's) but are worth owning IMO.

I have met this band on several occasions, and I can honestly say, they are one of the nicest bunch of guys you could wish to meet. I would also recommend them on that basis alone, but they are not really what you would call Metal.

WOW, that's a blast from the past. I remember seeing Little Angels playing a club called Stairways back in 1988 or 1989. A stonkingly good live band.

There is a music festival, Z Rock 06, taking place at JB's, Dudley on 24th September, here's a list of the bands playing:

FIREHOUSE [US]
TNT [N /UK]
TOBY JEPSON [ex Little Angels] [UK]
BOB CATLEY [UK]
SNAKERYDER [US]
LOST WEEKEND [UK]
DANTE FOX [UK]
EDEN [UK]

And it's only 30 quid!!! I've been to a few of the Z Rock festivals and it's a great day out and also an excellent way to here new music and meet the bands.

What does that N stand for in brackets after TNT? Surely it's not the Norwegian TNT from the eighties?!! They can't be still going can they?

It certainly is the 80's TNT, they now have Tony Mills from SHY on vocals. They brought a new album out late last year and it was as good as their old stuff.

I'm 40 so I suppose I'm a middle aged rocker

The best of the modern stuff for me is:

Incubus - the early stuff is heavier, a bit proggy and jazz/rock inspired
System of a Down - proper metal
Queens of the Stone Age - "stoner" rock, an aquired taste but probably the coolest band around.
Nightwish - full on goth metal opera, great fun.

Ah, there's so much to choose from these days - even the nippers know how to shred now

Well Slayer are still going with a new album just around the corner, Metallica's new album is due Q4 '06 or Q1 '07 - then you could do far worse than investigate:

In Flames (start with The Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony & Clayman - newer stuff isn't as popular)
Soilwork (Stabbing the Drama is their latest album, and one of their best)
Shadows Fall (The War Within)
Trivium (Ascendancy - and a new album due October)
Bullet for my Valentine (The Poison)
System of a Down (all albums as mentioned previously)
Thrice (Vheissu - one of the most interesting albums I've heard for a long while)

There're loads more, but with what everyone else has suggested there's plenty to search for on the Net and try out

I can highly recommend to all metalheads the Alter Bridge album called One Day Remains. Tis a bit of a corker. Find the Real, the title track & Burn It Down have become 3 of my fave ever songs and that being a metalhead for 30 odd years.

my first post and my recommendations

I just think that this is good f*cking music.

When it comes to metal - my background is Black Sabbath, early Maiden, the glammier Alice Cooper punk rock and Jazz music - that is a warning I suppose. I'm not a metal-head either. I'll just as happily listen to Motown soul, George Jones redneck country, Can krautrock, or King Tubby dub productions as any of the following - depending on my mood.

Boris (a japanese band with a seriously bad ass woman guitarist) - their newest album is called "Pink", a prior album "Akuma No Uta" is also a good place to start. Heavier than Heavy - often slow and doomy and then intense riffiness! These, like lots of the stuff on this list - are really hard to track down - but for ordering (even if it is overseas) you can't beat Aquarius Records (aquariusrecords DOT org) out of San Francisco - AMAZING SELECTION and they have turned me on to a lot of really great stuff - lots of info and fun reading the reviews of their VERY esoteric stock.

Electric Wizard - We Live, or Dopethrone, all of it!

High On Fire - any and all

Ufomammut - Italian Psych heaviness

Dungen - Ta Det Lungt (heaviness of a definite 70's vibe - lyrics not in english)

Black Mountain - very excellent heavy rock - and not to be missed live!

Hidden Hand - Political and proggy and really rocking from the dude Wino who did The Obsessed and Saint Vitus

Earthride - Vampire Circus

Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes or Ass Cobra are my faves

and Sleep, and Witch, Yob, Hammers of Misfortune, Snowblood (from Scotland), Witchcraft, Church of Misery, Green Machine. Damn. There is so much really nice Heavy stuff out there!

Great album, but might be a touch too far when your just getting into things. Totally Melvins inspired of course !

Just been put onto a great band called EVERGREY. They don't 'look' my type of band, all doom and gloom, thrashy lookin', but their sound is excellent. I can highly recommend them if you like the riffs of Metallica and 'drama' of Dream Theater.

Their latest album, Monday Morning Apolcalyse, is probably the best, and most accessible album they have done.

Certainly agree on that. Then maybe In Search of Truth and then Inner Circle. I guess you should never judge a book by it's cover as I would never have listened to them without a bit of prodding.
