Artist who have gone downhill

from a thread here already, came to my notice some people used to like Madonna but don't anymore which over Artists do you think have gone down hill,

i'l start with Prince, was a huge fan but have not liked his recent albums as much as his earlier ones, still good but no way as good as before. Michael Jackson also

who else?

Daft Punk...their first albums were genius but the last one they released was utter drivel...very poor and very disappointing! I would aggree with Madonna too, the last good release she had was The Immaculate Collection.

forgot about this in my first post but I think my favourite downhill artist has to be eric clapton. What a great band cream were. Derek and the dominoes...brilliant. Plain old eric on his own though is very boring indeed. Saw him live and the support were better than he was...

i wouldnt say madonna has went downhill, her current stuff is about as good as anything she has done before. i'm not a fan really, but bar evita and dick tracy she has been pretty consistant

who'd have thought 20 years ago that madonna would be the most successful in 20 years, and MJ completely down the drain

from a prince fan perspective, all the fans agree the music hasn't been as good for the past 10 years now, but he still knocks out some great stuff from time to time, but whilst some of his older stuff may have been patchy, it was more exciting than the patchy stuff now. it's frustrating knowing that he can do so much more but his JW religeon holds him back

i doubt anyone saw him on this weeks american idol finale? he didn't turn up to rehearsals, and only turned up to the studio 5 mins before he was due on (about 20 mins before the 2 hour show ended), strolled to the stage, sang2 songs from a dat tape and walked off to his limo and left. he wasn't even introduced as the host didn't think he was going to perform, so it was a surprise to him that he came on. they kept it a big secret that he was going to play, and prince just stuck a message on his website the day before "corinthians 10:14" - the don't worship false idols bit from the bible, as a clue to his appearance. still keeping the craziness whilst almost hitting 50 years old. he pulled the same trick with the brit awards, turning up unannounced. if only he put the same effort into the music

i was dreading your reply when i criticised Prince, but thank god its not as severe as the beating as i was expecting

Nitin Sawnhey, Beyond Skin and Prophesy were blinding, but downhill after that and Philtre was terrible in comparison,

if you want to see savage, you should see what the fans say about him themselves. i've seen seen any other group of fans slag of the artist they like as brutally as prince fans. one of my own comments about prince looking like stevie wonder dressed him in the dark was probably kevin smiths favorite comment for the documentary he made for prince that never saw the light of day (the one mentioned in the audience with KS). i notice he started wearing suits on tour and tv after that comment however...

if only kevin was allowed to complete that documentary and do his own cut where the fans let rip and slagged the hell out of him, it would be up there with spinal tap

apparently more prince stuff in the next audience with KS, where he talks about the backlash when prince found out he said all that stuff on the dvd and didn't sign the confidentiality agreement. i didn't sign one either, but i had to sign a waiver to play basketball at the studio. eddie murphys brother charlie did a great prince spoof where he played basketball on the dave chappelle show - if he only knew how close to the truth it was!

actually i thought it was a great album, but i didn't like any of the stuff they did previously. it was like they had finally grown up and made an adult album in a similar vein to something like the who. i prefer to listen to the clash if i want to hear buzzsaw guitars, rather than bands that don't have any members that were born while the clash were still around

Blimey here's a can of worms! List of underachievers:-

Rolling Stones. Nothing worth worrying about after 1974!
Radiohead. Went experimental which is fine, but things are now just 'patchy'.
Pink Floyd. Post Rog forget it.
MJ. Nothing worth a rub since Thriller.
David Bowie. Total, self indulgent, commerical cack since Diamond Dogs
Metallica. Last two albums (I like 'Metallica and Load), why bother?
Coldplay. (to Sgt Peppers 'getting better') "Getting more self indulgent all the time....."
Stereophonics. Last albums torrid.

On Madonna, never like anything shes ever done. Unarguably the greatest self publicist of all time, on (very) thin talent she's the most successful female act of all time.

Prince! 90% tripe!

Metallica definitely lost it after the Metallica album but regained a bit of credibility with Garage Days Revisited.

Tangerine Dream have been pretty much pants for the past 23 years. Hasn't stopped me buying their albums though. However, '75 to '83 they were peerless.

Bands that have gone downhill, well there are just so many.

Paradise Lost - Draconian Times was a definite peak, One Second wasn't bad, past that, blaar.
Therapy? - Nothing beat Troublegun, everything recently has been so medicore.
Pearl Jam - Ten through to No Code was great, there on all very average with nowt standing out. I'll get the recent one with reluctance just in case.
REM - Nothing past Monster grabbed me.
QOTSA - Lately they're just so formulaic, much preferred their first album and the Kyuss days.

As for Green Day - American Idiot, I really enjoyed it, different from the Dookie days, more commercial for sure, but still good.

I sometimes wonder whether its not just a band changing direction, but the mind set I had at the time. Being older now, with different tastes, I guess newer stuff from bands I used to be into doesn't grab me in the same way. But the releases from the same bands from back then, now just fill me with nostalgia.

yeah definately. altho i literally just got back from seeing dave gilmour play live in glasgow, with rick wright and dick parry, plus guy pratt (rogers replacement), and the other keyboard and guitarist that toured with post rog (aka crap) floyd. david crosby did backing on a few songs, graham nash sang last nite but had a family emergency so couldn't play tonight

anyways, after finally getting to see floyd at live 8, this was the first full length floyd type show for me, and a cracking one it was. rather than do another floyd album and tour, dave made a rather excellent solo album, which could have been released under the floyd name and it would have been hailed one of thier better albums, but instead stuck his own name and toured under his own name rather than pimp the floyd money machine again. i was never a fan of the 80s/90s floyd really, as they didn't sound like the floyd i loved, with 4 band members playing live properly without tapes (at least pre wall). whilst there were a few more people onstage, the floyd tunes sounded as good as they had in the past 25 years or more

i thought monster was a great album, and so was up. both were critically acclaimed at the time, but now some critics seem to pan both of them. the stuff after up didnt really grab me tho, not that it was bad, i suppose its hard to keep knocking out great albums all the time. adventures in hifi was a load of balls tho

Don't you like Le Parc then! That's a classic TD album! Apart from the odd live album though, I would agree. With Schmoelling's departure things went downhill fast. Post Franke, the bands lost the plot totally.

Le Parc wasn't bad. I like some of the Dream Mixes stuff. There are moments of greatness to be found if you persevere, but like you I think Schmoelling left a gaping chasm and it was all over once Franke left. Once Froese jr joined their nadir was complete.

As far as bands that have gone downhill I could probably just list every 80's rock/metal/thrash/hardcore and punk band in my record collection. A much tougher question for me would be bands that have improved later on in their careers. Nothing springs to mind though!

Whilst I think Coldplays albums have got proggressively better, I'd have to say since The Bends, Radiohead have slowly declined.

U2 peaked a while back, too.

And the Stones, Metallica.

And even my beloved Deep Purple, if I'm honest.

On a more mellow front, David Bowie, Elton John.

unfortunatley i think your right with radiohead. hopefully as thome yorkes solo album is all bleeps and no guitar like kid a and amnesiac, he will allow RH to get back to the guitars and keep the techno-noodlings to his solo work

the stones peaked way back in the 70s. the last album wasn't bad, and neither was the unplugged, but they don't hold a candle to exile or any of the other classics

right again with bowie, his last great stuff was the 70s, altho personally i liked the let's dance album, there's some great pop hits on there. bar loving the alien and jazzing for blue jean, he hasn't really done much decent since

same thing with elton john, best stuff in the 70s, a few decent hits in the 80s like i'm still standing (similar styling to bowie's let's dance album), but nothing decent since

i don't quite agree with U2 tho, they may have peaked, but they are still chucking out decent albums with a few great hit singles like vertigo and sometimes you can't make it on your own

not a fan of coldplay tho, they have some decent songs, but it all sounds the same. and i really mean it all sounds the same. same tempo, same chords. it may as well be the same tune and lyrics too. perhaps they will go away and refresh themselves or change style like u2 or radiohead did. they are just one band that i can't understand why they are so big

agree with the cold play and radio head album whole heartedly but i think U2's how to dismantle an Atomic Bomb was a great album. Agree with Unique that "sometimes you can't make it on your own " and "vertigo" are both fantastic songs. really well put together

I was a big Simple Minds fan in my teenage years when they were churning out good stuff.

Then they went through a 10yr period when they had 2 or 3 terrible albums.

However, to be fair to them, their last album was excellent, and even got good reviews from the press that had enjoyed panning them for years.

Bryan Adams career took a bit of a nosedive after 'Everything I do' as well. I think it was because he noticed how easy it was to make money from crappy slow love songs, so he went down that road just a little too often.

Also disagree about U2. They too had a dodgy period for a while, but 'How to Dismantle An Atomic bomb' is superb.

A band that has been around for a while which still blows me away is Tool.

Everytime I've heard one of their albums I think "I've gotta get that".

I recently got '10000 days'. Absolutly wicked!!!!!

I've seen them live twice. Both times brilliant.

I think most bands work get's worst as it goes along. It's much hard to find bands that improve or at least stay at the same level. Maybe it's all the money that changes them or record companies get too involved or perhaps people only have a certain amount to give. Perhaps it's us that changes. We often love a band because of where we are in our lives and when a group brings out a new album things and have moved on in our lives and we cant connect to the music like we once did.

For me, I feel that bands dont rock anymore...... "His eyes glissen with the ghosts of his past". Come back Bon Scott..... all is forgiven.

At risk of being flamed, and as much as I really like their new album, the chilis haven't changed their musical style since '99.

Blood sugar sex magic is so far beyond anything else they have ever done.
