Thanks: Gave 148, Got 87 | Red Hot Chilli Peppers - New Album !
I've just purchased their new "Stadium Arcadium" album on CD, and i think it's fantastic
What does anyone else think of it, and of the band in general ?

Due to the title, I wrongly assumed this was another live album & didn't pre-order it - I've ordered it now, but cdwow haven't sent it yet.
Love the band though; saw them at Brixton on the BloodSugarSexMagic tour.

As it's a double I imagine it will take a while to fully digest but are there many 'average/filler' songs on there?
I do like the Chilis, both the earlier stuff (Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Mothers Milk etc) and the more mature last 2 recent albums. But for some reason, I'm never excited about new releases by them. I tend to be battered into submission by rather excellent and catchy singles and then regret not buying the album earlier
Does this one contain the usual mixture of styles and does it break new ground?
I saw Q gave it 5 stars, and compared it to Physical Grafitti in it's quality .
But other reviews have said there was a good single album in there
Do you find yourself reaching for the skip button? or do you find you are replaying that last song because it was sooo good ?

Once there was a pretty good band called the Red Hot Chili Peppers, most people didn't listen to them because they were off the main stream. They produced a couple of good albums, of particular note was Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Later albums went for a more pop centric style of music which no longer had the tight focus of the older stuff and soon they were simply a crowd pleasing, stadium filling act.
I'm not going to say they are rubbish, they are clearly not that and they certainly get a crowd going and can still string a great tune together. The problem with Stadiumarcadium is exactly that, there are a few sparse pop hits and the rest is pretty ordinary. The songs no longer have any real spontinaity or originality about them, its very ordinary music, a safe easy route to increased revenue and continued fame and fortune, relying on a few slightly better hits to keep its sales going. No doubt the album will do really well and the shows will all be sold out, which is amazing for a band with punk roots. But like REM, slowly, the lack of original material begins to return them to an obscurity, while fashion dictates that the Snow Patrols and Arctic Monkeys of the revolving door music scene mop up the fans.

Personally, I think it's the best album of 2006 so far.

Love the band though; saw them at Brixton on the BloodSugarSexMagic tour. | No it's their first Studio Album for years... 28 tracks on 2 discs Excellent value if you enjoy the group..
Their first album Blood, Sugar, Love, Magik would takes some beating though so it's not as good as that..But very good none the less...
I agree that they have gone tame over the years, but they are certainly a quality live act, in my humble opinion !

I have no idea what the best album of 2006 is because I'm not going to listen to them all, (but I prefer Tool to David Gilmour )
I remember I was at University when Mothers Milk came out, we in the house loved it (I wanted Fleas trousers from the Higher Ground video ), but all thought the previous album was better .
Then a few years later the singles for BloodSugarSexMagic came out, followed by the album. At the time we thought 'Sell outs!' (we were students who knew best, and hated the idea that other people might discover our band ).
So 3 full months after the album came out, one of us finally bought it, and we all agreed it was rather good.
The moral is students are fickle and I've tried to put my music snobbery behind me (I even admit I was listening to Kula Shaker in the car today).
God knows how this post is relevant, but hey
