A friend lent me The Wall, Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd. Bothers In Arms - Dire Straits, A Night At The Opera and Greatest His, Queen. I would like to buy these albums plus more DTS 5.1 cd albums, but Virgin are unable to help. Any help please

Some of the DTS CDs you list are not official releases. The Queen Greatest Hits is available on DVD-V and A Night At The Opera is available on DVD-A, both have a DTS track. The Pink Floyd DTS CDs are conversions of old quad 8-track or quad vinyl releases done by enthusiasts and are not available to buy.

There are loads of these unofficial DTS CDs doing the rounds including most of the Beatles and Floyd albums, Steve Miller, ZZ Top etc and sound very good in parts, not so good in others.

Just shows what can be done though

When did they start releasing these type of CD's? First I'd heard of them was just days ago!

I guess developed for use in DVD players and/or SACD multi channel (can they play standard CD's too?)

The first discs appeared about 1999ish I think. All you need to play them is a CD player with an optical or co-ax out and a reciever with a DTS decoder. Spose you could also use a DVD player that did DTS encoding internally with the 6 channel outs.

Need to be careful though not to accidently play them undecoded as you'll get a nasty digital static sound that is unpleasant for your speakers and ears.

Err.... so what's the difference between SACD and DTS CD ? Can you get 5.1 DTS via optical on these CDs ? If so will this finally kill off SACD ?

A hybrid SACD (most of them are hybrid) will play on any standard CD player, a DTS CD will not. An SACD will have a stereo mix in addition to the multichannel mix, a DTS CD will not. An SACD is lossless hi-res a DTS CD is lossy.

"Can you get 5.1 DTS via optical". Yes, if you have a suitable reciever.

Mandel, a "standard CD player" will play DTS CDs providing that it is connected an AV pre/pro via the digital i/o and the pre/pro can decode DTS

Not a problem - I'm only interested in the 5.1 mix.

Again not a problem as my ears are full of wax anyway

Great - this is what I wanted to hear as it will free up my analogue inputs for surround gaming with my PC sound card. Now a quick visit to Play.com methinks .....

Just make sure you have your volume turned down *LOW* the first time you try to play one, just in case the amp doesn't lock onto the DTS stream properly or something.
