Finally got hold of this, and I was very disappointed. It reminds me of some of the less successful punk bands of the late 70's.Poor quality music, with poor quality production. Why all the fuss?I can't work it out.Perhaps I'm just an old fart, but I do like music and this does nothing for me.

Heard a track on the radio earlier this week (bet you look good on the dancefloor??).
Thought it was very bland - another old fart wondering what the fuss is about I guess. Sounded like more music with no balls to me though

They're not bad. I think they're a good band, but I certainly don't think they're anything special. Every now and again there seems to be a band that explodes onto the scene, and everyone's talking about them (The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers). At the moment it's the Arctic Monkeys. Time will tell if they're here for the long run. Have to say, though, extremely impressive on the sales front.

Indeed; since when did music sales figures bear any relation to quality?

I think this is an excellent release - pre-ordered it from amazon but only received today as few other items were out of stock.

Got round to listening to this today on the way in to work... to be honest at a first listening I can't see what all the fuss is about.. maybe it will grow on me but it didn't have the initial impact that albums such as the Editors, Hard-Fi or the Killers have had recently..

(Yes I know the Killers' album has been out for a while...)

Listened to the album last night, sounds a bit like the clash meet the macc lads meet George Fornby with a bit of half man-half buscuit lyrics thrown in. Especially like the sleeve & notes as looking at the pictures they just dont care what people think & that can be a good way to be. Overall I'm impressed and I can see what all the fuss is about, god knows how they will follow it though.

gotta agree with dolph, it might be a grower, but i wasn't really that impressed. there's no way i could see myself actually "listening" to it rather than having it on while i'm surfing or whatever. nme's claims that it's in the top 10 british albums of all time are way off the mark in my opinion.

I've only listened to snippets on iTunes but it doesn't make me want to go out and buy it. Music mags like the NME and Q are notorious (IMHO) for coming out with sweeping crap statements like that one ! I remember Q magazine describing the first Foo Fighters album as "the most important album of all time"

Hi,

I was bought this for Valentine's day. Ok, it's nowhere near as good as the hype, but I reckon it is pretty decent. I'm sure most 'indie' music fans will like it. The recording is decent quality, it is mixed by someone who really likes to hear the bass guitar; not a bad thing in my opinion.

Regards,
Ian

Fair enough to the people that say it doesn't do anything for them, but after almost 2 months of almost non-stop listening, this is becoming one of my favourite all time albums pretty quickly.

I suppose the 30-40 something demographic inevitable of a high-end (and cost) forum means that anything other than an "i love phil collins" music thread will be met with derision

NME had a list over greatest records of all time sometime late in the eighties, Smiths took 5 of the 10 upper spots...
Although a smashing band by most standards, come on.
NME just love to find the "next great band" and hyping them out of all proportions.

And Games Guru, I'm 36 and like the Artics, so step back.
Not the greatest album of all times, but nice nonetheless. Just gotta disregard the massive hype and see that they are an okay band behind all the NMEzation.

Cheers.

Games Guru,if an album,or any music,is deemed to be aimed at a particular age group then it's obviously not good music.Good music is exactly that, music that anyone will enjoy and which sells itself.Perhaps those of us past our sell-by date simply have to much knowledge of decades of stunning music to which bands like the Arctic Monkeys cannot compare.I've just uploaded over 6000 tracks onto my Zen Touch to take away for a week, not one is an Arctic Monkey track, but there's some fantastic music I'll be listening to (on shuffle so I never know what's next) Just because some spotty nerd at the NME rates them doesn't mean they'll be around this time next year.Let's face it,said nerd probably hasn't heard of 90% of the bands on my Zen and that's just a part of my collection.I'm confident there are a lot of older music fans who still pick the best of the latest music to listen to,it's just that we've learnt to make our own minds up as to what's good and what's hype.
Regards
The Old Fart (who can barely remember 40 let alone 30)
