Why are some CDs sealed and other not?

Hi guys, this has often puzzled me - how come some CDs (& DVDs for that matter) are sealed and other are not? Any reason?

The only thing I can think of is it depends were you buy them from. Some shops keep the disc's behind the counter.

I tend to buy the bulk of my music from online - mainly amazon.co.uk and some are sealed other are not - its not dependent on the artist and/or label either. The thing is I'm sure a few years ago when I started buying cds (music in general) they were all sealed - but maybe it was just coincidence. I always worry that when its not sealed I'm getting someones return or something however I've had so many (a majority) that I assume its not that.

Personally, I'd rather record distributors didn't use plastic sealing for CDs. It's terribly wasteful and can't be good for the environment.

It's also waste loads of yer time trying to eagerly open the buggers

However I'd rather they did as it keeps the shells in scratch free condition that is if you don't knife the blighters to death opening them Don't know why they can't have release seals incorporated.

I'm with you on the hermetic sealing process - I've damaged enough cases that way, which is another reason I detest plastic wrappers! And even the ones with the tear-round strips don't always work ... very easy to get an odd rip that goes ascew and then you're hunting round for a sharp object to ruin ... I mean, open ... your new CD!

Tell me about the plastic seals, I just bought a bulk order of around 40 cds and they were all sealed apart from 3. Took me bloody ages, some had an easy tear system going on which I found even harder to get open...

I've switched from using DAPs as I've had 7 in less than three years, and almost all have broken within 6 months. I've since returned to CD portables (now got two decent Panny's), which seem to output my CDs much more powerfully than compressed music devices ever did. Consequently, I'm hoping these, with their broader frequency response range, will prevent the clipping of deep bass and high trebles. Heard some good things about these on the Net, so I'll have to wait till saturday to try them out ... that's when they're being delivered.
