first gigs

saw paul weller at the nottingham arena last night....fantastic great show and a particular awesome drum solo form yer man whitey .
anyway it was my first proper gig for 5 or 6 years and on the way back me and the missus were talking about our first gigs and how old we were.
mine, adam and the ants (dirk wears white socks tour and before all the dandy highway man stuff) must have been 12 or 13 because i was in the first year at school....the missus........bob marley in paris when she was 9 years old!.
reckon i got severly thrashed in the credibilty stakes on that one!

Motorhead's 10th Anniversary !!!

There was a mountain of Marshall speakers on stage, and at one point 10 guitarists on stage too

I was deaf with ringing in my ears for 3 days afterwards!

And a nekkid Sam Fox came busting out of a huge birthday cake.

Ahem ... Bon Jovi headlining at Cardiff Arms Park in Summer 1995 was my first gig. Never seen so much amplification amassed in one place before or since! Also saw Van Halen, Thunder and some God-awful LA Rock band called Crown Of Thorns (whose sole lyric seemed to be, 'Are You Ready?') at the same gig.

Since then, I've only seen Texas about four years back (supported by Semisonic), and this year, the outstanding Tori Amos! It was at the Hammersmith Odeon - or Carling Apollo as they now insist on calling it - and she was amazing! An all-acoustic set, and not a note out of place. That girl can really play and sing live ...

Donnington 1990 when I was 16 - Thunder, Poison, Aerosmith and Whitesnake were amazing, Quireboys weren't. Seeing Steve Vai and Jimmy Page was an absolute treat too - was hoping for Vai but never expected Page.

Last gig I saw was Joss Stone this year which was ok, just that it was her first tour and we saw the last leg - she was pretty croaky then and has little in the way of crowd interaction beyond the cutesy giggle which gets boring after a while.

Also saw Racine earlier this year - Wendy James' new band - fantastic, and meeting her afterwards was a real treat too - such a nice woman, and every bit beautiful as the schoolboy crush I had 17 years ago!

Next gig is Bon Jovi in June - been my favourite band for 20 years, can't wait - they are always so great live.

Haven't checked, but that was probably me - Damned at The Rainbow, 1978 and I was 13...

The promoters left the seats in... big mistake, they all got torn up and thrown on the stage...

My Dad came to pick me up and wandered into the back of the hall late on to witness a scene of almost complete anarchy... Amazingly, he still let me go to see the Angelic Upstarts/UK Subs gig just a few weeks later...

think the damned still tour... a friend of a friend was really good mates with rat scabies....wish i knew that at the time,i was just talking about a uk subs gig at the cambridge corn exchange i went to,half way through the set the power died.think it was something to do with the fact thet the place was a listed building and had some sort of cut off device which kicked in if the noise level got too much.
saw quite a few of the punk bands still knocking about in the early 80's.
think my favorite live band at that time must have been peter and the test tube babies...absolute quality entertainment, though king kurt were a close second.

First ever?.....The Stranglers before they became famous, and quite honestly before they learned to play....they arrived at our Student union bar,got totally trashed, and made a loud noise for an hour before needing to refuel...made some of the bands I saw at the Hope and Anchor look like seasoned session men.....

Agree. Bon Jovi are outstanding live performers - well worth the ticket value. Ditto, Texas. Can play, sing and give you your money's worth.

Rainbow at the Bristol hippodrome on the 'Bent out of shape' tour, I think. Was a long time ago and I think I was ten or eleven - so maybe 1983. Joe Lynn Turner was on vocals.

Pete.

I was there. I though the Quireboys were excellent and IMO Whitesnakes set was the letdown of the day.
I can't remember who was on stage at the time, but I remember the PA being drowned out as Concorde flew overhead

Yeh they are great live - shame about the latest album though

Oh and back to the origional topic - my first gig was Madness at the Hamersmith Odeon in either 79 or 80. I was about 10 years old and the ticket cost me £1 and that was cheap even then.

Mark.

September 28th 1984, Liverpool Empire, Dio - The Last In Line tour with a very young and unknown Queensryche as support. What an introduction to live music that was. Oh, I was 13 at the time, a week before my 14th Birthday, my best birthday present ever!

One of my most memorable was the 'Guns n' Roses' Donington in 1988 as it was my first Monsters of Rock and it was just one crazy alcohol fuelled weekend.

Just seen Harem Scarem in Toronto and that had to be the loudest gig I've been to for some time; took my ears about 3 days to recover.

That was my first Donnington too! I recently sold my shirts from that day on ebay.

First ever gig was Status Quo Crystal Palace '84. Before you all laugh the ticket was a surprise present from my big brother as I was only little and I had a great time! Phil Lynott suported too which was cool.

My ex used to go to SQ gigs religiously for years. They're great live, according to her ...

Cool. I had a DIO ticket as he toured the UK in Oct just gone, however, in Sept I decided to bunk of to OZ for a long break so I missed it. Have ways wanted to hear Holy Diver and All the fools sailed away live. Ho hum.....maybe he will tour when he is seventy?

17/09/1998 Mogwai at Bridlington Spa

An awesome night, they were opening for the remains of the manics, and the place was teeming with the kind of 16 year-olds who thought 'everything must go' was the best rock tune ever written...

About half way through the second song some manic srteet children took offence at somebody knowing how to use a guitar properly, and started throwing beer onto the stage.... they obviously hadn't encountered a metal band before.

The guys didn't waste any time, amps straight up to 13 and new guitars all round...

They then proceeded to play louder, and louder, and louder, and louder, until people started leaving, and then they played louder still. By the end of the set, the previously packed hall was 3/4 empty, barely a manics fan in sight...

We stayed to watch the manics too as we'd caught the train there to see Mogwai... and they were easily the most ****** off band I have ever seen in my life... the one with the fat face looked like he was about to cry..

Excellent.

Genesis at the NEC around 1980. First proper use of the 'new' varilights as I recall. Was quite something as a first gig.
