Anyone knows why there is no Live 8 DVD from Philadelphia?
Anyone knows why there is no Live 8 DVD from Philadelphia?
I was pretty disapointed to realize there was much of Philadelphia gig cut out on Live 8 DVDs, almost as dissapointed as when I realized there were no Led Zeppelin on Live Aid.
Any known reason for this?

the 4 disc set released over here is essentially 3 discs of the best of uk and usa, we had the best bands here, some of the american stuff was a bit lame.
there are 3 different 1 discs for the best of paris, germany, italy and canada, so overall, each of the countries gets about 1 disc each, with uk getting a bit more
publishing and performance rights probably also has a bearing as to the performances being released. i understand that led zep weren't happy with thier performance, which is the reason it wasn't on the original live aid dvd set. when geldof put together the original live aid he did it by telling the acts it wouldn't be released or rebroadcast, which is why when he auctioned off the rights for the dvd that whoever bought the rights would still have to negotiate the rights with the artists involved
the artists this time obviously knew that they were on to a winner by being included, but at the same time possibly declined to allow certain parts of the performance to be released, strange as that may sound. other acts would love to have a greater inclusion, but the editiors and producers of the boxset opted to cut certain material to fit everything on the disc in decent quality, retaining a good running order. essentially the release of the dvd is to raise money for charity, not to provide the ultimate complete document of the many hours of all the shows, which were broadcast around the world for all to record off air

Most of the acts over in the States were hardly known to UK viewers.. that has something to do with it.
Besides, BBC broadcasted the whole 5 hours of the Philly Live8 gig after the London concert had finished after midnight on 2nd July.

ah, but the same content is in the usa boxset, so that can't have too much to do with it as i'm sure they will shift way more copies in the states than in the uk
the london show did have by far the best acts, so if it was merely choosen as the best of the two shows i think it would end up the way it was. the uk had mostly "proper" bands playing "proper" instruments, whereas america had a load of rappers etc (i like rnb and rap and most of those artists that performed and would have liked the full kayne west set) or boring old fogies like the bernard mathews band, so i would also say the uk acts were probably the most interesting to watch
mind, i was expecting seperate box sets for each country, or at least a seperate uk and usa set, but in this digital age i suppose die hards can always get the full thing on dvd anyway

I disagree about the Live 8 disk having the best bits from Canada - no Deep Purple - they were regarded as the highlight of the otherwise dull Canada show.

i don't think anyone mentioned canada at all. in fact, i don't think there is anything from canada on any of the discs. neil young would've been good if he played, i don't think joni played either did she?

See post No 2
By the way I agree Neil Young would have been great - a separate Canada disc was released (includes 2 out of 3 deep purple tracks) - not sure if Neil Young made it on the disk.
