Jamiroquai Dynamite DualDisc

Hey folks,

I see the above album is coming on DualDisc with an "enhanced stereo" version of the album on the DVD layer. Does DualDisc have a fixed sampling rate in this regard i.e. 24-bit 96Khz? There doesn't seem to be any way of telling from the internet listings.

DT

Which again re-inforces (IMHO) the benefits of having ONE smapling rate standard for Hi-rez formats, like SACD's 2.8Mhz

No, the sampling rate on a dualdisc can be anything. Looking this release up, I see it is from Sony, in which case (from what I've heard from many people about Sony Dualdiscs) there is a very good chance that it is 16/48 on the DVD side only.

Turtle,
I agree with your comment re:sampling ratevariability on discs albeit it smells a bit of the futile debate of DVD-A vs SCAD again.
Sadly it seems like the blu-ray/HD-DVD specs seem far from resolving the same issue since DSD isn't even in the spec AFAIK.
When you look at HD video broadcasts (same issue) there will be no guarantees of quality there either.

OK, the disc has arrived and it works fine on both the 900V and 963SA (unusual, as they both have utterly useless transports). For some reason, the "display" function on the 963SA refuses to appear when playing the "high-resolution" stereo track. The 900V does, however. The display says "PCM" and the bit-rate is shown as 1,536 kbps.

Now, AFAIK normal 16/44.1 red-book works around 1.5Mbps. This would imply the "high resolution" stereo track is nothing more than 16/44.1 (or perhaps 16/48?). That is, unless, the highest audio bit-rate that the Sony "display" function can show is 1536Kbps? What would the bit-rate be at 24/96 resolution?

I doubt I'll get a proper response from the record company. In fact, I have absolutely no idea who I should contact in this regard to confirm/deny my suspicions?

Rgds,
DT

Yep, complete & utter idiocy of the very highest form. Very bloody angry and might just send a stinking e-mail to SonyBMG and CC in watchdog & trading standards!

...and a complete rip-off to boot! Play were selling DualDiscs for £13.99 - so you're paying (in most cases) an extra £5+ for a double-sided disc with no real qualitative or quantitative benefit

Personally, I won't buy another DualDisc unless a.) It's the same price as a regular cd, or b.) they can put together a package that includes HIGH RESOLUTION stereo and/or surround-sound and some meaningful extras

the thing is, until you put the disc in your player and check the audio output, you don't know what resolution is on the disc.
i see the foo fighters recent album is now coming out on dual disc, and they're still claiming that it contains the entire album in high res stereo. unless they've made changes from the original dvd it only has half the album, although it is at least 96khz 24 bit.
