G3 Live In Tokyo

Just received this concert DVD which features Joe Satriani Steve Vai and John Petrucci from Dream Theater - watched Joe & John's set both of which were excellent with some nice playing alongside the expected "fret-burning"
The 3 guitar "jam" consists of their versions of Foxy Lady / La Grange / Smoke On the Water and is pretty spectacular - there some neat footage of the soundcheck before the show where you can listen to a commentary by each of the three guitarists explaining what is going on - audio is 2 channel PCM or DD5.1 - nothing stunning about it but decent enough to my ears in 5.1 or stereo through cans - got my copy from CD Universe for about £8 and definately a "keeper" for me ... Paul
PS The backing bands vary for each guitarist & notably included Dream Theater's excellent drummer on Petrucci's set & the first jam track

I'm looking forward to it as it could be the best of the three G3 DVD's. I've the first two and didn't think either lived up to expectations, and neither are as good as Joes 'Live in SF'.

... not quite in "Live in SF" league IMHO but close - I'm not a big Vai fan so haven't watched his set all the way through yet ... when you see the DVD have a look at one of Joes tracks (which he refers to as "mellow"!) the guitar he plays has at least one extra string

Satch has used a 7 string Ibanez for a while now, at least since his Strange Beautiful Music CD anyway.
I'm quite a fan of Satriani and Vai though I prefer Joe's music more than Steve's virtuosity.
John Petrucci I don't know. Think I'll try and find some "Dream Theater" and check it out.

Check out 'Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory' or the live DVD of that era 'Scenes From New York'

Dreamtheater =

Under a glass moon + Metropolis Pt1 (Images and words -1992)
Voices (Awake -1994)

are probably my all-time favourite metal tracks.....

Petrucci is a god.... Portnoy is THE god.

Steve Vai was once upon a time Joe Satriani guitar student but along the years i think he has pasted his master Petrucci is a master himself all three gods of guitar playing. This and all G3 concerts ar outstanding a must in all rock fans collection.

goodtimes - I got Budokan when it came out - I posted a similar thread to this one see here - "Live At Budokan" - Dream Theater - the thread ended up as a bit of a slagging match although there are a few comments about the DVD if you look hard
