Thanks: Gave 1,025, Got 885 | Songs that hit the spot.
Hi there
Since I got into music at a young age, I have always made compilation, be it tape, MiniDisc , CD,s or Playlists on my Ipod. Have never been a great whole album listener, and much preferred to make my own albums.
Remember making tapes from my old record player with my hand held tape recorder, then that Christmas my Mum and Dad got me an Amstrad HiFi with twin tape deck . A lot of time has past since then.
Anyway started this week making a new CD to listen to mostly when the wife and kids are out, about the only time I get now.
One of the first tracks I choose was
That's Entertainment by The Jam
I have owned this in all sorts of formats, and copied it on all types of formats..
Its just one of them songs that has seemed to follow me from them days of the old record player in my old bedroom, and I just don’t seem to tire of it, not sure what it is about the song maybe the words, the acoustic guitars, or the bass line, one thing that did make me laugh was listening to my 5 year old daughter singing it the other day in the car with me.
Just one of them songs that hits the spot for me.
Cheers Holo

I know what you mean about the joys of compilations ... even though, these days, I prefer listening to albums.
I must've gotten into music at about age 13. By the time I was 14, I was compiling tapes from all of my parent's LPs and cassettes - didn't buy any stuff of my own till I was about 16! I just loved the control I had over what I listened to. And I got really good at getting rid of those clicks between tracks when you pushed pause or stop!
I only discovered CD burning about three years ago, but never got into it ... I moved very quickly to MP3 players and playlists. Since then, I've switched to listening to albums, or putting all 5000+ tracks on random shuffle!
As for a song that hits the spot, I can always remember hearing the track 'Putting The Damage On' by Tori Amos. It's jaw-droppingly beautiful, and I particularly love the brass playing. One of those songs I'd stop to listen to no matter where I was.

Thanks: Gave 679, Got 340 | 'Cuddle up' by the Beach Boys never ceased to move me. In fact in the past it has made me burst into tears. Another Beach Boys related track called 'Forever', recorded by Beach Boys drummer Denis Wilson. Absolute genius and a track I too always take with me.
Out of the blue however, one song I simply love for the absolute genius musicianship has to be 'Where Eagles Dare' by Iron Maiden. It is the opening gambit on the brilliant 'Piece of Mind' album, released in 1983. I have listened to this album on every format since the day it came out and even flew to Australia with it playing in repeat on my i-pod. As for the actual track, I have to ask myself how Nicko McBrain manages to roll the tom toms at that speed and complete the fills he does, whilst Steve Harris vision on the bass is something else. It is one of those tunes that I continually rewind simply to listen to the opening salvo, wondering how the **** did they do that. The Early Days DVD is essential viewing with regard to this tune too!
Holowlegs, great thread by the way!
Pete.

I'm an old f**t too,I used to make compilation tapes off vinyl, then cd's,then burning cd's,but then I discovered a 40gb zen touch which is now full and set to random shuffle just like shadowritten.I must admit that walking the dog is even more pleasurable as a result, lots of music I'd forgotten I had.For me though the track's got to be The Last Resort (Eagles),bliss.

As for Tori Amos, that’s someone I have not heard for a while must dig out that Pele album and am sure I have the one with Cornflake girl on it, what was that dance track she done?
While I am digging better find Linger by The Cranberries, another good track.
Must admit my music taste has not stretch to the others yet.
Like to suggest another track that has been hitting the right notes recently. But first the story how I came to be listening to it. Was working nights at IKEA Brent Park about 3 years ago, they use to play the radio all night and it was either magic or heart not to sure which, and you know when the play them ½ hr slots of nonstop music. Well we worked there about 3 weeks and they kept on playing Norah Jones so much we all ended up knowing the words and singing along to it think the main track would have been Don’t know why. Got so bad a few off us went out and brought the album. It was one of them albums I brought and never really listen to, if you know what I mean.
Well move on a couple off years and, have moved house and all my CD,s are in boxes. Wife for a birthday present buys me an Ipod, and with it as I drive a firms van an Itrip, so I can now listen to my Ipod on my vans radio. One off the first albums loaded into it was Norah Jones - Come away with me, only because it was at the top of one of the boxes. Now I don’t know if this happens to other Ipod users but when on random the Ipod seemed to love one track, my one loved one called Nightingale of this album, it sounded ok in the van and a little sing along when driving around.
Loaded the cd into my hi-fi (AV system what ever you want to call it), which I am upgrading at the moment, and with each upgrade this track just gets better for me. Not sure what it is, do like the vocals, but there’s this guitar in it which really hits the spot for me.
Sorry about my waffling on.
Cheers Holo

| Dont be. I have said it before on here, but MP3 players, whether i-pod, zen, river, what ever, have changed music and how we listen to it forever. Like DRD I too listen to stuff I forgot I had. Before I came travelling, I had my i-pod in the back of my amp on random shuffle. I would sit reading the paper and a tune would come on which would make me stop and think, 'bloody hell, this is a great song'.

| Cheers for that, two artist I have heard off but never really got into. Will return the favor, with one of my own compilation.
Agree with you about MP3 players changing the way we listen to music, its like having all you favorite songs in one box, if you know what I mean. What I have also notice is stuff I thought I liked I don’t now.
Cheers Holo

I used to make compilation tapes off the radio 1 chart show on Sundays nights many years ago and got quite good at stopping the recording just before Tony Blackburn came in with "what a sensational sound that is" over the ending of every record !

Blasting through my entire Jam / Paul Weller / Style Council etc. catalogue tonight in preparation for seeing him in Cardiff tomorrow night
Love everything he's ever done .
The song that gets on every compilation of mine is Thin Lizzy's 'Still in Love With You.' Have 8 versions of it, every one special in its own way.
