EMI's DTS Signature Series

Being a fan of Simple Minds during my teenage years (and admitidly still a fan now) I was intrigued to read about the release of two of their best albums on EMI's DTS Signature Series, New Gold Dream and Once Upon A Time

I resisted buying them as most of the remasters that have been done covering their old releases is shoddy at the best....but last week I finally got round to ordering them.

WOW

Once Upon A Time was the first CD I ever bought so hearing it now as a completely remixed and reproduced DTS 5.1 96/24 format is like hearing it for the first time again!!!!

I have a few SACD's and DVDA's but nothing comes close to the clarity and depth that these two albums have. Roland Prent and DTS have used the origonal 24 track masters to go back and re produced the albums so tracks are longer and have vocals and sections that were never included on the CD due to space limitations.

There are a few more releases in this line but for anyone who even remotely likes Simple Minds (there must be a couple of you ) I urge you to get these two releases as they are simply amazing!

Hi

I love Simple Minds, my fave albumn of all time is NGD. I must have seen SM over 25 times since 86 to 2004. I have just upset my other half by telling her I am going to have to buy it again & a new DVDA player too

OH well here we go.

You will not be disapoingted with New Gold Dream The title track along with a couple of others are 'unedited' versions and are a little longer plus there is an extra track, 'In Every Heaven' which is the origonal version of the b side 'Soundtrack for Every Heaven' before the vocals were stripped.

I still can't stop listening to these two discs....they just sound sooooooo good

I have seen them a fair few times too (went to every UK show on the Streetfighting Years tour many moons ago ) and still rate them as one of the best live bands in the world. Went to a couple of the smaller venu's to see them the other Year and the Sheffield show was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. Even my Wife thought it was great and she HATES Simple Minds !!!!!!

Hi CLeric

That Sheffield gig a couple of years ago wasn't the City Hall gig was it??? I was on the front row for that one

As for Street Fighting Years tour I went to Cardiff, Wembley, Leeds & I think I went to another on that tour but memory isn't so good as it used to be.

I think I will have treat myself to the LImit DVDA player

I have the remastered versions both the limited card one & the hard case one. So will need these for completist

It was the City Hall one...I was at the front for the first few songs but my Mssus stayed at the side so I went back to her after a while Still really near the front though.

I also went to all the UK Real Life gigs but they were not quite as good as the Streetfighting Years shows...the Leeds Roundhay Park show was an amazing experience as me and a few friends slept over in my car in the park and had the show area fences put up round us by the crew.( we were asked to move by the police the evening before the show though..lol) Got a great view of the soundchecks for that one though

What did you think to the remasters? I was not that impressed and found some to sound very harsh compared to the origonal releases

I try not to be as 'completist' as I used to be...My Wife still can't understand the 150+ SM vinyl releases I still have even though I dont even have a deck anymore

Oh I sold all my vinyl years ago to fund the full catalogue on cd.

The early albums I think are excellent remastered. The later ones I wasn't really impressed with. To be honest though I don't really play anything past Sparkle in The Rain I played the new albums to much when I was a teenager

I have just purchased the Pioneer DVD player to play these with & hope on Fathers Day my 2 sons will be bringing me 1 each

I just can't bring myself to part with all the vinyl...plus there are still a few that have the odd track or b side that has still not surfaced on any other format yet (was annoyed at how many live tracks from the Real Live tour were repeated on Silver Box when there are still live tracks on b sides we have not had on CD yet )

One of my favourite SM albums is Empires & Dance...fantastic deep sound that is almost suffacating but I love it

Hmmmm which ones have not yet been released on cd??? Do you have the the 4 themes boxsets???? I think the only ones missing where the extended Someone in summertime which had the guitar part missing. This was rectified on the cd single version which is now one of the collectible discs to have. Hmmm if I remember correctly there is one other track that I am aware but can't remember which may be missing.

As far as I am aware the following are still not available on any 'official' CD release....allthough if you know of any that are please let me know!

Special View (b side from Life In A Day 7")
Garden Of Hate (b side from Chelsea Girl 7")
Film Theme Dub (from limited edition 7" flexi free with 7" I Travel)
Thirty Frames a Second - Live(b side from Arista 7" I Travel re release)
Promised You A Miracle (b side of US 12" Prmoised You a Miracle release)
A Brass Band in Africa (b side of Up On The Catwalk 7")
Soul Crying Out - Live (b side of limited Edition Laser Etched See The Lights 12")

I think there may also be a couple of Remixes from the Cry singles that were only released on vinyl in Europe.

Do you mean are they releasing SFY as part of the DTS series? I dont think there is any news of future releases but I would love it is SFY and Real Life were part of the next batch!

Empires and Dance was produced by John Leckie...Steve Lillywhite produced Sparkle in the Rain.

They are in Dolby Digital 5.1 as well as DTS 96/24 5.1 and the work that has been put into the new multi channel tracks is fantastic.

Sorry, meant to put that the disc was in DVD Audio 5.1 and DTS 96/24.

The sound is high res multi channel on both discs (with the exception of two tracks on New Gold Dream which have not been remastered ...don't know why )

Sorry Gary, forgot to reply to this.

I have the four Themes box sets as well as the Someone Somewhere in Summertime CD with the extended intro. I also have all the 3" CD single releases plus the Ghostdancing gatefold CD single as well as loads of promo CD single releases.

I used to be osessive in my youth about collecting EVERY single Simple Minds item I could find.....I would travel all over the country to collector fares to find anything I could.

I have about 100 different posters still all rolled up and sealed in a big plastic liner up at my Mums house....there are some great ones too that I would love to frame and put in our house but my Wife has said she will divorce me if I do (makes it even more of a tempting idea )..I also still have one large drawer that is reserved for all my Simple Minds T shirts ( about 50 I think)...even though half of them are discoloured and dont even fit me

I have some really nice rare vinyl stuff too...some of it was very hard to find and that is a lot of the reason why I can't bring myself to get rid of it.

Just a quick not to add that Roland Prent has said he is in the process of remastering three more Simple Minds albums for the DTS Signature series that will be released later in the year

One of them will be the new album, Black & White 050505 (the standard release is on September 12th) but there is no word as to what the other two will be yet.

fingers crossed for street fighting years then - as IMO it was the last consistently decent SM album.

I think it will be SFY and Live In The City Of Light (should sound amazing as a multi channel mix!!) but I would not be suprised if, rather than Live, we get something like Sparkle In The Rain or Real Life.

I wouldn't mind Real Life as it is the kind of album that would no doubt be very good as a multi channel but I just can't see how Sparkle would benefit ??

"Live..." would be good, but having the live dvd it would mean less. i like real life but its a bit patchy and good news from the next world made me want to cry.

Hi Cleric

You sound as obsessive as me. I used to have some great reare vinyl stuff from all over the world. My favourite item was the canadian clear vinyl of sparkle in the rain. When on the turntable spinning it would make the most fantastic patterns

3 more albums eh????

My choice would be

Sister feelings call
Street Fighting years
Sparkle in the rain imagine book of brilliant hings in surround or kick inside!!!

Not to fussed about live in teh city of light I have better bootlegs than this so called live album Which spent more time being perfected in the studio than when originally recorded.

As for New Gold Dream I just love the beginning to NGD how it starts from the back & envelopes you in sound. This is just how I always imagined JK wanted it to sound, he always called it sound wallpaper for the room.

Regards

Gary

He he..yep, remember many a fun time watching stuff like the clear vinyl Sparkle or the US Shaped picture disc of Dont You on the record deck

Live in the City was soooooooooo overproduced it was unbelievable but I would love to hear Book Of Brilliant Things and New Gold Dream in DTS 96/24. I always thought of the LITCOL version of New Gold Dream as almost a new track. It is so different to the original yet is as good in so many different ways.

I would love to hear some of the stuff on Empires And Dance in multi channel too...can you imagine I Travel

New Gold Dream does sound brilliant dosn't it...it just fills the room.

Have you seen all the pre release info for Black & White 050505 ? it sounds like all the press and major musical mags are touting it as one of the best albums of the year There is talk of it being the new 'New Gold Deram' in both it's sound and structure...I have heard the first track, Stay Visible' on a very bad recording and it does sound pretty good....

...heres hoping!

Hi, haven't seen any of the pre release info for Black & White 050505. I dunno I always seem to be dissapointed with their new releases, so tend not to get to hyped up about them now. I still look forward to them but try not to get to eager.

I had a few Don't You picture discs from various places.

I must admit though this current line up is probably the best since SFY. The 2 new members on bass & keyboards where really enthusiastic about the whole SM experiance. They also seem to have quiete a big input on things too which is a good thing considering JK's ego

Apparently it was these 2 that convinced the band to do a reworking of Chelsea Girl on the last tour. I sae the band do the first performance of this song since LID tour at the Albert Hall & JK had to do it with the lyrics on a sheet of paper. He had totally forgotten how the song went . A fantastic experiance. Then the next night they played Life in a Day too. Songs I just never ever thought I would hear them play never mind somewhere as grand as the Albert Hall.

Starting to go on a bit now.

Regards

Gary

They'll sound even better in DVD-A MLP 5.1!

I thought these were in the (pretty much) dead DTS CD format for a minute.
