Matt Freeman of Rancid (who sadly now has lung cancer) - the bass solo half way through Maxwell Murders. I've seen him do it live and he actually got through it twice in the same amount of time.

Come On Part 3 - by Stevie Ray Vaughan! It just makes me wanna give up.

EVH - Eruption (a massive influence)

Also alot of stuff that Vito Bratta (remember White Lion?) did was excellent!

Most of the above esp. Comfortably Numb and also most of Frank Zappa's I'd also like to nominate

Burn - Deep Purple/Richie B
Free As A Bird - Beatles/George H
Golden Brown - Stranglers/Hugh C

Excellent topic

In no order:

Gary Moore: Still got the blues for you
Thin Lizzy: Still in love with you and/or Whiskey in the jar
Joe Satriani: Surfing with the alien
Steve Vai: For the love of God
Eric Clapton: Crossroads (Live w/ Cream)/ Little wing (Live Eric Clapton & friend in concert)
Mark Knopfler: Sultans of swing (live - nelson mandela concert)
Buddy Guy: Too broke to spend the night
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb
Jeff Beck: Where were you
Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Chile
Stevie Ray Vaughn: Texas Flood
BB King: Thrill is gone
Freddie King: Goin' Down
Johnny Winter: Memory Pain
Led Zepplin: You shook me

If you can play all this stuff then Blues-Rock is alive and well! Could have had a whole thread on Clapton stuff though

Hendix - hey Joe(unusual i know)
Santana, most of his
Peter Green(fleetwood mac for the youngsters in the audience) - Black magic woman, man of the world
Gary moore - Still got the blues
Led Zepplin - stairway to heaven(and other cliches including the Eagles, but hey, they are good)

My favourite Jimmy Page (Led Zep) solo would be the half time section in Heartbreaker.
An air-guitar classic!

At this moment I am mostly listening to Deep Purple, Made in japan whilst trying to do some work (sad I know at this time of night).

Ritchie Blackmore - a stupid, arrogant sunofabitch, but listening to him on Sweet Child in time, God he was good!!

The rest of the album aint bad either

You forgot 'Oh Well'. That track is historic with some totally mental guitar work.

Uh oh... just got to the next track on Made in Japan... "Nuh, nuh, nuh...nuh, nuh, nuh, nuuuh...nuh, nuh, nuh, ...nuh, nuh, nuh, nuuuuh", (c'mon sing it) Smooooke on the water.

i'm sure if i think i can come up with all sorts of magnificent solos, but right now, just before i go to bed, i'm loving James Hetfield's lyrical little solo on Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. oh, the harmony lead in Master Of Puppets is a beauty too.

It's good but there must be 100 better Prince guitar solos than Purple rain, especially when you start listening to his live stuff. Even from the Purple Rain album, I would say that the end of Let's Go Crazy and Computer Blue both have better guitar solos than Purple Rain.

All IMHO of course.

Phil, did Calton play on Bhodisatva? That's a favourite of mine.

I used to love the blues-rock stuff when I was younger but don't listen to it as much now.
Back then the longer solos did it for me ( Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Eric Clapton ) now I find what ever suits the song/track is more important than time. Short and sweet, intense or just plain quirky are all good enough for me.

Favourites would include:

Frank Zappa - Black Napkins (Zoot Allures),really an instrumental - does it count?
Bill Nelson (Be Bop De Luxe) - Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape(Live in the Air Age)
Zoot Horn Rollo (Capt. Beefheart) - Long Necked Bottles (Clear Spot)
Chas Jankl (Ian Dury) - My Old Man (New Boots & Panties)
Glen Tilbrook (Squeeze) - Another Nail In My Heart
Robert Fripp (King Crimson) - 21st Century Schizoid Man (In the Court of the Crimson King)

Do you mean guitar solo where the guitar is solo - i.e. a single guitar piece with no accompaniment by other instruments/vocals?
Or do you mean a lead break where there is an instrumental piece played with the guitar taking the lead and accompanied by other instruments/vocals ?
