Whats the most depressing song ever?

a couple of days ago i had to sort out my loft, going through boxes i found some old records so for a laugh my wife and i dug out the old record player and started to have a listen.

anyway the purpose of this post is to ask what is the most depressing song you have ever heard?

my choice is Gilbert O'Sulivans "alone again (naturally)"

this has be the most bleak record ever written - everybody dies on him and even God doesn't want to know.

so whats your choice?

Gary

Got to be 'Dry Your Eyes' by The Streets for me - if ever there was a song to kill yourself too it's got to be that one.

Good thread! We could make a compilation CD and double the suicide rate overnight

Right...

Most of the This Mortal Coil album "It'll End in Tears"

esp. Fond Affections. 'There's no light at the end of it all, let's all sit down and cry.'

Simon and Garfunkel - At the Zoo. Sounds like a song about people being nuked I think. Really mournful and affecting. "Twisted sightless wrecks of men go crawling on their knees and cry in pain..."

Radiohead- Exit music for a film. Kind of a 'typical' example in my eyes. Not so much depressing as radiohead being radiohead! A great song.

Johnny Cash- Hurt

I agree with Joy Division, in fact anything by that over-rated band

"Avalanche" by Leonard Cohen has got to be a contender.

From his third album "Songs of Love and Hate", this (albeit marvellous) song, more than any other, probably gave rise to the perception of him as Top Miserable Bastard In Rock.

With lines like...

"When I am not this crippled hunchback that you see..."

...and...

"I myself am the pedestal for this ugly hump at which you stare..."

...this one scores a firm 10 on the gloom-o-meter.

Makes Morrissey seem like a jolly Scouser!

Tori Amos- Me and a Gun generally doesn't have 'em dancing in the aisles. Would also suggest Nobody loved you by the Manics as well.
