Favourite album covers/sleeves

The 70's was a great era for flashy album covers. Although CD's don't have the sheer size, they can still have nice packaging (including a nice print on the disc itself).

What is your favourite :-
LP cover
CD package

Mine :-
LP's
Led Zeppelin 3 + Physical Graffitti
Pink FLoyd - Animals

CD's
Tool - Lateralus
Pulp - A different Class

Led Zep III has a gatefold sleeve with a wheel you can turn to make different images appear in the holes in the cover. (Those who have it will know what I mean.)

Interesting thread.
I havn't seen the 2 LP's but own the 2 CD's you mention. If we're including album inlays as well then Lateralus definitely has to be up there with the best. The holographic cover of the Special Edition Aenema is even better though!

Here's a few favourite covers from my collection:

* 4ft Fingers - At Your Convenience
A toilet bowl on a skateboard.

* One Minute Silence - Available In All Colours
Probably the cleverest artwork I've seen on a CD. Not sure the pic does this justice.

* The Clash - The Clash
A genuine photo of the police running into a riot. I'm sure this was much better as an LP though.

I hope nobody posts anything from those "Worst Album Covers Ever" emails.

When you are replying scroll down below the reply box and you will see a tab named manage attachments click on this then browse to your photo and click on upload.

You may have to alter the size of the photo as you are limited to 120kb i think

Here are a few notable quality album covers:

Anathema - A Natural Disaster
Bass Communion - Bass Communion II
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Deep Purple - In Rock
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream.

Others that I would have added, but are already mentioned above are Radiohead 'The Bends' and Tool 'Aenima' (the hologram cover version).

Regarding The Raven ,have you got the rarer one tho ?

On the inner sleeve, for Nuclear device, its got a drawing of the Aus Prime minister at the time (Patterson ? ) naked, with Australia over his privates. Was withdrawn shortly afterward.

Classic album, their best up there with Rattus, and my all time fave track 'The Raven' the title track. Beautiful, headphones, dimly lit room...priceless .

Some goodies here...

Almost anything for Yes by Roger Dean.
Ditto anything by Hypgnosis (Storm Thorgesen) who did lots of Pink Floyd (dark side of the moon and wish you here) and this one by UFO called 'Force It' (I think). They were probably the best album design company of the 70s/80s.

Dark side of the Moon: Pink Floyd
Electric Ladyland: Hendrix
Unknown Pleasures: Joy Division
Wish you were here (x2): Pink Gloyd
Tales from Topographic Oceans: Yes
Sticky Fingers:The Rollings Stones. The earliest ones came with an actual zipper on the cover. This designed by Andy Warhol. Apparently it caused problems at the record plant as the zipper caused dents in other tracks on the album when they were stacked on top od each other. Apparently this was prevented by unsipping the zipper so only the center of the LP was damaged.
Technical Ecstacy by Black Sabbath
Force It: UFO

This is just the outer cover, yet to find piccies of the package as a whole.

another vote for dark side of the moon

and one for sgt pepper

if you don't know what those album covers look like, then you must have been living in a cave for the past 35 years. or blind. or spend too much time on the playstation

much as i love the bends by radiohead, i think it's an awful cover. perhaps another thread on great albums/crap covers would be good

Absolutely outstanding piece of design work. Must have cost them a fortune to produce this. As good as any I've seen. Ever.

Yes, that's the one.
It is a swine of a job getting the disc out (which is why I've burnt a copy for general use), and can also be difficult to store depending on the type of shelving you use (I've not had a problem, but Eviljohn has though - see the other thread).
