Pet Sounds

I cant believe that Ive never heard this album. I love the music of this era, in particular Sgt Pepper, but I never got round to Pet Sounds.

So which version should I buy?

Theres a DVDA version (or maybe its a SACD - cant remember), and also a Mono and Stereo version on regular CD.

What d'ya reckon?

Good taste.................Which one to get has always been a bit of a mystery, fans will tell you to get the mono version, I bought the bog standard stereo version and its pretty reasonable. I suppose vinyl is the thing to buy.Mobile Fidelity probably did it at one time.

If you like that album you might be intersted by The Kinks. Try "Something Else" or "Village Green Preservation Society".

Dont forget the Velvet Underground "VU and Nico" is great. Thats the Banana album which was re-mastered recently.

or Pink Floyds......Piper at the Gates.

or Televisions - Marquee Moon.

All intelligent cutting edge music.

Get the DVD-A version as it has the mono, stereo and surround mixes

Surround mix is a bit weird and I've just about got used to it. Don't forget to get the Sessions boxed set

As an aside I much prefer Smiley Smile

I agree with Karkus on the 2 Kinks albums, Village Green was recently re-issued as a 3 CD set, which is brilliant

We don't agree on VU though

I only have the one VU album, so cant comment on the rest of their output. But VU+N is a really innovative album which must be responsible for the sounds of so many bands. Each track is unique and treads new ground, its not my favourite Sunday album and its unlikely that I would buy any others as its not an easy listen, but as a Masterwork it is up there with the all time greats.

Have lived with this album for years in many incarnations. Bought the DVD-A hoping to hear a bit more into the mix, but it was no more involving than the current remastered version on CD.

If you go for the CD, make sure you buy the one with the Mono and Stereo mixes as this is a superb re-master and is HDCD encoded. If you're a real fan, go for the box set (also HDCD encoded).

I agree re: the re-re-mastered CD, it is very good. As I said the DVD-A has a strange surround mix but you can pick-out more of what's going on in the recording.

The Sessions box is superb
