I was actually thinking of starting a thread for great covers never released by well know artists. In that most of my choices would come from Radio 1s Live Lounge. However I guess this thread is all about covers that have made it into the chart.

I agree with most of what has been said
Jonny Cash "Hurt" (NIN)
Jo Cocker "With a little Help from my friends" (Beatles)
Guns 'n Roses "Live and Let Die" (Wings)
Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince)
However I disagree with that "Wonderwall" cover. Mike Flowers was awful!
Who did the original of H.O.T.R.S. that the Animals played?

Other ones
Whitney Houston I will Always Love You (Dolly Parton)
Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen), although I bet people will ague that Rufus Wainwright version is better.
Leona Lewis "Run" (snow Patrol) was a great cover but I'm not sure if I'd call it "Better that" the original, same could be said with her "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" cover too.

Both songs that Birdy has released, "Skinny Love" (Bon Ivor) and "Shelter" (The XX)

One of my personal favourites is the Hayseed Dixie cover of Omen by The Prodigy. In fairness though most of the Hayseed Dixie covers are awesome!

I've just remembered another good old classic

This Flight Tonight - originally by Joni Mitchell but made so much better by Nazareth in my opinion.

Prefer the John Cale version myself.

Any TON cover - some faves by the Drab Four are:
Type O Negative - Summer Breeze (Seals and Crofters may not recognise it )
Type O Negative - Day Tripper / If I Needed Someone / I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Type O Negative - Black Sabbath (orig version and also the Satanic Perspective is pretty cool )

+1

Their cover of 'Dueling Banjos' is note perfect. Though no squeeling piggies

Another for the list:

Van Helen - 'You Really Got Me'

This is how the Kinks' version would have sounded (minus the guitar histrionics) had they not been limited by the recording equipment of the time

This will be very controversial to some !

I've always thought it was a great version, esp the Fatboy Slim remix

Trent's cover of Adam And The Ants' Physical (You're So) (b-side of Dog Eat Dog) isn't too shabby. Adam and Marco and have joined NIN on stage to perform it ... it's the 'hidden' track 98 on the Broken EP

Ceremony by Radiohead is better than the original Joy Division version.

I hate to say it as I'm not a massive Radiohead fan and I am a massive Joy Division fan! The problem is that there's just not a very good example of it by Joy division, all the recordings are pretty sub standard.

There's loads of cover versions that I love. These are all better than the original as far as I'm concerned:

Paradise Lost - "Smalltown Boy" (Bronski Beat cover)
Limp Bizkit - "Faith"
Forever Never - "You're The Voice"
Forever Never - "Boombastic"
Disturbed - "Land of Confusion"
Joyrider - "Rush Hour"
Orgy - "Blue Monday"
Panic Cell - "Crazy"

At Vance - The Winner Takes It All

Their cover of I Surrender by Rainbow/Russ Ballard is nearly identical to the original which is brilliant aswell.

It is very similar in that it is more or less a note for note copy (as opposed to doing something original with it). The Sabbath one is more doomy and the FNM one has a touch more snap to it (especially the drums). I guess it depends which you prefer. There's not a massive difference, but personally I prefer the snap of FNM.

I just posted it as it's a great cover and is my personal favourite.

Well then what about the five finger death punch cover of from out of nowhere? IMHO that is a hell of a lot better than the FNM version.

The Whitney Houston cover is the type of emotional overkill that ruins any song for me. The Dolly Parton original has a simplicity and understated sweetness which I still find heartbreaking.

Due do to overexposure I never need to hear Hallelujah again, in any version. I much prefer Buckley's cover of Lilac Wine.

Agree as well - I also really like the GnR cover of Sympathy for the Devil, maybe not better than the RS original but just as good.

Guns N' Roses- Sympathy For The Devil - YouTube

Also think Megadeth - No More Mr Nice Guy is a tad better than the original

Metallica - Whisky in the Jar - hmmm, not sure if it's better...

Newton Faulkner "Teardrop"

Meatloaf "Rock and Roll Dreams come through"

Beautiful South "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Don't Stop Movin"

Not sure if this counts but Ewan Mcgregor and Jose Feliciano "Roxanne" (or El Tango De Roxanne to give it its proper title.)

Here's a Faith No More killer cover:

Faith No More - I started a joke - YouTube

EPIC!

Seeing them do this on their return gig at Brixton - blew me away

In fact found the live version I saw - mindblowing

Faith No More LIVE-"I STARTED A JOKE" at Brixton 10 6 2009 - YouTube

Gutted it sounded nothing like Epic, in fact the lyrics were completely different too.
