Who should I be listening to these days... suggestions please!!

My interest in music took a serious drop of cliff like proportions after my kids were born 12 years ago. It's only recently that i've taken a greater interest in finding out what's good these days.

Previous tastes were generic rock - Led Zep, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Queen, Lou Reed, REM, Talking Heads, Foo Fighters, U2 etc.

Any recommendations for some good 'bands' in the traditional sense. Rap holds no real interest for me and some bands like Coldplay seem a bit on the miserable/dull side TBH. The Darkness seem to have brought a bit of fun back into music.

Plus I want some stuff that my kids can listen to and be 'cool' with their mates at school. At the moment they are devloping a good ear for 'proper' music as opposed to generic boy/girl bands.

Thanks in advance

CL

A quick answer for now: get 'Uncut' mag and try the sampler CD. There's good stuff on there every month, and this month is no exception.

Nikyzf

Just Googled Uncut magazine. Would this be the one with the free 'American 2004' CD on the front. Looks damn good value to me at £3 a month for an album!!

Will track one down. Cheers

I'd go "backwards" and check out classic albums by e.g The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Television, early Bowie, Love, The Clash...etc...etc

How cool would your kids be when they come out with e.g. "yeah, the new single's alright but I think you'll find that Nick Drake used the same riff on.....etc....etc"

Plus, you'd be quite a cool dad..."What does your Dad listen to ?" -- "Dido. Yours ?" -- "Oh, the Velvets and bit of Iggy, Stooges-era of course."

Interpol - Turn on the bright lights
A perfect Circle - Mer De Noms
Kings Of Leon - Youth And Young Manhood
Incubus - A Crow left of the murder
Tricky - Maxinquate
Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts
Idlewild - Hope Is important

Used to buy XRay cos of the free CD untill they stopped producing the mag.
Other than that, I listen to a lot of music, and if I like it, I like it.

Please bear in mind that Chris mentioned:

"rock"
"bands"
"kids"
"cool"

and, er, no boybands or hip hop (although I did include the beasties)

The very same. The cover price is £4.20. I started buying it a few years ago and realised I was buying every one, so I get it on sub for much less; maybe it works out at £3. The CD is actually 'Americana 2004'. Americana or alt.country (or even y'alternative!) has been the big thing for me for the last few years, largely thanks to Uncut and it's superb sampler CDs.

If you like REM I think you'd like Wilco, Son Volt/Jay Farrar, The Jayhawks, Counting Crows, Mercury Rev, and The Flaming Lips.

Brit bands I really rate are Teenage Fanclub, Cosmic Rough Riders, Elbow, British Sea Power, and The Alabama 3.

Best album of last year, IMO, was 'The Wind' by Warren Zevon. Truly great stuff by someone sadly no longer with us.

Not sure about helping your kids to be cool- that way lies madness ;o)

Fortunately my kids have pretty much bypassed the whole Britney/(C)RAP/Boyband rubbish.

I did actually get the Kings of Leon from the library at the weekend. (excellent album BTW - parts sound very Velvets/lou Reed plus Lynrd Skynrd and George Thorogood thrown in for good measure. It must be good as nobody else in the office liked it (they are all old farts like me but must have lost touch with what sounds good these days - too much Lighthouse Family and Dido etc.).

But what a great place the library is for picking up new stuff. I was amazed at how much stuff they had, but I needed a few pointers as to what may be worth listening to.

But keep the suggestions coming please.

Chris

If you like The Kings Of Leon, you'll like Queens Of The Stone Age.

If you like Lou Reed, you'll probably like the Strokes.

With rumours of a new album comming out this year, there is no better reason to listen to some 'Tool' - They have had increasing exposure with each release so the next album could be huge.

They may be Jack Osbournes favourite band, but they are out on an unclassifiable limb producing very creative music. Don't let first impressions put you off, they are a seriously classy and intelligent act, if a little hard to get into.

Still lots of copies of the original CD release knocking around for a fiver, but worth paying the extra for the HDCD re-master (don't worry if you haven't got a HDCD compliant machine - it still sounds amazing on a standard CD player). This has the original mono mix and a stunning new stereo re-mix from the original multi track masters, both on one disc.

Coolest album in the world with the naffest cover EVER!

If you're just after it on a compilation, then this is probably the best reasonably priced one ever.

Unless of course you fancy splashing out on this which is as definitive as it gets. As well as the prime single and album cuts there is a large amount of previously unreleased tracks which are generally superb. Highlight being a tantalising half-hour or so of the unreleased "Smile" album sessions, which even in incomplete form are nothing short of stunning. No one was doing anything like this in 1966 (or since, for that matter)! Fairly hefty book in this package too.

If you want the original abum it's on this. Like many of the early albums, these two were turned out under extreme pressure from Capitol who were trying to get three albums per year out of the band (Capitol squeezed 18 original albums out of these guys in 7 years!), with Brian Wilson writing and producing as well as touring constantly with the band, Not to mention writing and producing for other acts on Capitol's roster.

Accordingly, they do have their share of rushed / filler tracks (not to mention one toe-curlingly bad spoken word track for the female fans - bear in mind these guys were once marketed as a boy-band). However, both albums do also have their share of bona-fide classics / flashes of pure genius. Especially considering the elder Wilson was all of 19 when he started producing this stuff. "Warmth of the Sun" in particular is a stunner, an incredibly mature work, written immediately after the news of Kennedy's assassination.

Their first two albums are fairly primitive with only a few stand outs, these two (the 3rd and 5th studio albums) are a quantum leap forward . However with the "All Summer Long" album it was plain that something very special was up and from then on it's plain sailing with goodies galore.

Never been a cheaper time to buy either. The entire 62-85 catalogue is available as 2-on-1 discs (superb HDCD remasters with jam packed booklets as well) all at £4.99 each in the HMV sale as we speak. Exceptions are the Xmas album and "Pet Sounds" which are stand alone discs.

Suf's up dude!
