If you're just after it on a compilation, then
this is probably the best reasonably priced one ever.
Unless of course you fancy splashing out on
this which is as definitive as it gets. As well as the prime single and album cuts there is a large amount of previously unreleased tracks which are generally superb. Highlight being a tantalising half-hour or so of the unreleased "Smile" album sessions, which even in incomplete form are nothing short of stunning. No one was doing
anything like this in 1966 (or since, for that matter)! Fairly hefty book in this package too.
If you want the original abum it's on
this. Like many of the early albums, these two were turned out under extreme pressure from Capitol who were trying to get three albums per year out of the band (Capitol squeezed 18 original albums out of these guys in 7 years!), with Brian Wilson writing and producing as well as touring constantly with the band, Not to mention writing and producing for other acts on Capitol's roster.
Accordingly, they do have their share of rushed / filler tracks (not to mention one toe-curlingly bad spoken word track for the female fans - bear in mind these guys were once marketed as a boy-band). However, both albums do also have their share of bona-fide classics / flashes of pure genius. Especially considering the elder Wilson was all of 19 when he started producing this stuff. "Warmth of the Sun" in particular is a stunner, an incredibly mature work, written immediately after the news of Kennedy's assassination.
Their first two albums are fairly primitive with only a few stand outs, these two (the 3rd and 5th studio albums) are a quantum leap forward . However with the "All Summer Long" album it was plain that something very special was up and from then on it's plain sailing with goodies galore.
Never been a cheaper time to buy either. The entire 62-85 catalogue is available as 2-on-1 discs (superb HDCD remasters with jam packed booklets as well) all at £4.99 each in the HMV sale as we speak. Exceptions are the Xmas album and "Pet Sounds" which are stand alone discs.
Suf's up dude!
