Talking The GREAT Neil Young

Just totally into him at the moment: playing Rust Never Sleeps and On The Beach non-stop. The guy is better than Dylan for me Well, at least his equal anyway.

All we need now is for his albums to be remastered. Its not happening though as far as I know

His guitar solos are the best i've ever heard

Couldn't agree more! Zuma has to be my favourite album, even if it's just for Cortez the Killer.

The king is dead, but he's not forgotten. Hey Hey my my is amazing. The guitar sounds SO rough (electric version). How does 1 man create so much quality? He's definitely up there with Prince, Dylan, Bowie and VanMorrison as the most talented solo artist of all time. Honourable mention for Joni Mitchell though :-)

I've only got 'Harvest' and 'Weld' (Crazy Horse live)
Love them both, Weld is awsome - when 'hey hey, my my' kicks in you know they mean business.
Decided against buying the 'Arc Weld' vesrsion though.

agreed he is the man

The CD version of On the Beach I picked up is remastered they reissued quite a few albums not too long ago.

On the Beach is my personal fave although Tonights the Night comes close

'Weld' is one of my favourite live albums....it just sounds so, er, loud. Really captures a band at the top of their powers.

After the Goldrush is on the album of that name. Personally it's my favourite Neil Young album. Harvest is great, prefer the vinyl to my DVD-A copy. Rust never sleeps, American stars and Bars, Live Rust, and Comes a time are my other favourites.

Pat Metheny, great guitarist!! For my sins I quite like Jazz rock (we all have our problems!)and he along with Beck really stand out. I don't mine Satriani's guitar playing but I don't like his stuff so.............. Same with Lukather really. The latters a real wasted talent. Great guitarist playing AOR tripe!! Shame!!

Agree, Neil Young is among the best. A rare combination of a great writer and also a great lead & acoustic guitarist. (Not to mention the harmonica & piano)

Fantastic.

As to Lukather....just look at the list of sessions he's appeared on.....over 1000 appearances spread over the years, for some of the most famous artists....also a superb and irreverent sense of humour, especially when it comes to the record industry.

Neil Young though,is an amazing performer...equally at home with country style rock as with really heavy crushing stuff( Rust etc)....and still going reasonably strong....a huge legacy of songs.

I was referring to his own stuff as part of TOTO. He certainly has played on some far better material for other artists. I wasn't deriding his undoubted talent, just his main bands poor quality stuff.

I know it's way off the main topic, but as you say,his talent on guitar is beyond doubt, and some of Toto's offerings are poor, but live, they're another matter, and obviously not only play superbly well, but evidently enjoy it....unfortunately both of those attributes are becoming increasingly rare, and it's good to find a few bands who can still play live(and of course Neil Young can still cut it live as well....)....btw,try "No Substitutions Live" if you can find a copy...Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather in Tokyo...superb.

I'm not talking about fret W@'@nking. I'm talking about melodious guitar solos. Techincal ability is one thing. Soul is another. And Neil Young has soul.

Hit the nail on the head there, mate.

Nobody else plays quite like Neil, he's got his own unique style (although Ian McNabb does get pretty close sometimes using a similar style/sound).

Talking of McNabb, did anyone see his set live from Glasto last Sunday night on BBCi? Great Stuff!

Not much chance of CD remasters of the non-remastered stuff while Warners are trying to persuade us to buy DVD-Audio.

Re. CD vs Vinyl. In an A-B comparison of the recent digital releases of "On the Beach", "Hawks and Doves", etc, I found that the HDCD re-masters put the vinyl well and truly in the shade. And I'm playing original vinyl pressings on a £1k+ turntable.

Dying to hear the same quality re-masters of "Harvest" and "After the Gold Rush". Get your fingers out Warner!

No-one could doubt Neil Young's soul, nor his ability to lay down some real crunching rock.....like I've said before it's a shame that so many of the newer acts just can't play live,or seem to put any energy into it.

Never been that much of a NY fan, only ever bought Neil Young & the Bluenotes - This Notes for You. However, loved the soundtrack to Dead Man (Johnny Depp, John Hurt, Iggy Pop, Robert Mitchum.....). But if we're talking guitar, then its between John McLaughlin & Alan Holdsworth.
