Just bought a Jap copy of "Crash" - Human League in mint condition with obi along with a Canadian copy of Human League's EP "Fascination" which was a stop gap after Dare featuring Fascination and Mirror Man - again mint condition.

The pair for 40 quid. No idea when they will arrive though due to the snow etc....

Wish there was a 180G release of their greatest hits....

Haha - nice.

Did a trip around my local charity shops today hunting for vinyl. The only place that had any was the YMCA - Val Doonican's greatest hits etc.

Ah well.

We have a shop called "Records and Relics" up in Blackpool so may take a little trip up there on Xmas Eve to see what they have.

Dug out my party box of vinyl too - there's a few Beatles 7"s in there that are coloured vinyl - juke box releases. Wonder if they are worth anything today....

Chick Corea Elektric Band (self-titled first album) - second-hand via eBay, also 'Inside Out' by same artist a week or so ago, also via eBay

Have had the CD of the former for many years, looking forward to a 'different' sound on vinyl.

Answering your question Moby. I've finally got my hands on my Rega RP1. I'm not into all these technical terms so I'll try and answer in simpler terms. I have been listening to my cd collection through an Arcam CD73 player, which is meant to be a fairly good player......well the RP1 is blowing it out of the water. The music just seems to come to life more. There is more range, more sparkle, it just feels real. I've found myself tapping my foot along as I'm listening to tracks. I haven't heard music sounding this good for a long time.

Obviously this praise is down to vinyl being better than cd (I'm now sold on this), but if you're like me and you're wanting to start up then I can highly recommend this player from what I'm hearing. It's ticking all my boxes.

Yesterday I raided the local charity shops and bought

Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
Depeche Mode - Singles 81-85
ELO - Out Of The Blue

All play faultless, all for just under £3!

I'm a Level 42 fan and for Christmas my wife found a copy of Running In The Family, mint condition...50p!

Thought the following video may help you with setting up your new turntable.

YouTube - how to adjust the height on a turntables tone-arm

And a great website for tweaking - here

I had a touch of high end treble distortion - this cured it.

Just a little follow up. I run my turntable with 0 anti skate, 2.5g of tracking force (recommended for my Ortofon gold cart) and I was struggling with treble distortion. I tried to dial it out with my equaliser but it was coming directly at source level. As it turns out my tonearm height was WAY out. Sound is now unbelievably better. I say unbelievably because I didn't think vinyl could sound any better.

With setting the tonearm height correctly I now have an incredibly pure sound. Very happy.

Still got my originals, although my copy of Dare is a bit worn, and Travelogue. The only album I don't have on vinyl is Crash (bought it on cassette arrrggghhh on the day of release because they didn't have any other version). Still got loads of 12" too, even Louise!

Brilliant, I absolutely love them. Saw them live a few weeks ago in Manchester - they sounded stunning and put on a great stage show. Always makes me laugh how Joanne doesn't seem to want to be there though. She does three dances (shoulders left then right forwards, clap above head, shoulders left then right up and down) with a rather forced smile.

But I love her!

At least we wouldn't have any arguements about the girls of the League then, I have always been a Susanne Sulley fan! Went to see them on the latest tour (Folkstone), and for the last few times I have seen them I have been jumping up and down waving at her, trying to get her to wave back. I will continue to go and see them until she waves back, then life is complete!

Yes, rather embarrassingly if I wasn't married to my lovely Wife I'd be chasing After Joanne

Anyway, back on topic - just ordered a Japanese copy of "St. Elmo's Fire" - mint with obi

You'll have to give us a review of the Sinatra in Paris records. One of my favourites is Sinatra at the Sands.

Popped into Chester today and came home with

Level 42 - World Machine. Cover a bit scruffy but sleeve and vinyl almost like new.
Alexander O Neal - Hearsay. Only had a quick listen to the first track but seems to be virtually new condition.
Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair. Cover in very good condition, little bit of background noise on the disc.
Scritti Politti - Provision. Looks in fantastic condition, sounds amazing but there is quite a bit of background noise.

These four albums.....£10....bargain!!!

Like I said, the Scritti Politti sounds absolutley fantastic but there is a lot of popping and such going on in the background, mainly for the first couple of tracks on each side. I've cleaned it a few times now and gone over it with my brush a few times but it's still there which is a shame. I'm guessing a bit of dirt has ground in over time although it does suprise me as the album is in immaculate condition and out of the four records I bought it was the one that looked like it least needed a clean.

Have you tried wet-cleaning the album? I use one of these and it makes a lot of difference. That said, the '80's was a time of poor quality vinyl/pressings and you may just have a dud. I remember having to take many records back to the shop to change them for ones without problems.

I have looked into those before.

I had the deck for Christmas which really came to my budget, then I really needed to buy some vinyl. I bought a brush and after buying quite a few records over the last few months, I couldn't really justify paying £40 at the moment. I did buy a record cleaning spray which was about a tenner and I've been using that.

Going back to that particular record, I've give it a good going over a few times with the spray and (I know I'm going to get a sharp intake of breath here) give it a wash in the sink, with a light amount of washing up liquid and then a good rinse with lukewarm water afterwards (followed instructions on a video off You Tube). After rinsing it, I then immediately went over it again with my spray. None of this has made any difference, there's just a constant crackle in the background for the first couple of tracks (not really noticeable on louder parts).

The record does sound fantastic though (even after the wash in the sink), just a shame about this noise. I may well look into one of those cleaners in the future but with wanting to get my hands on as many records as possible at the moment, I can't quite justify the expenditure.

Copy of "Hits 4" from 1986 arrived today. Going to give it a spin after lunch. Vinyl looks super clean, gatefold sleeve is in pretty good condition. Can't complain for a fiver delivered!

I had a listen to the Hearsay album last night. It's in virtually mint condition and I though obviously someone's bought it and never really played it.

Playing the first side, I just felt that I needed to turn the volume up to try and drive the vocals out. I wouldn't say that they're muffeld but there wasn't the oomph that I've got off other records. Coming to side 2, I turned it over and wham!! Had to turn it down slightly. All the clarity was there, vocals just leapt out.

Obviously there was a fault on that record, or maybe it is how those tracks are? Made me realise why it wasn't played so much. Not that I'm bothered, when it was one of four records for a tenner! It still sounds very good on side 1, just not quite as good as side 2.

This is what I'm loving about vinyl, sifting through, trying to find old albums that I loved or want and trying to get good quality. It's a bit hit and miss (mostly hit for me so far to be fair) but that makes it even better when it's right.

Walked into one of my local charity shops today with a basket full of bits and bobs for them. I've already raided their vinyl box but I thought being as I'm there I'll just take another look through just incase there's anything I'd missed. Looks like they'd recieved a fresh donation. I walked out with:-

Police - Greatest Hits
M J - Off The Wall
M J - Thriller
Jeff Wayne - War Of The Worlds
10cc - How Dare You

All these in fantastic condition and all for the princely sum of £4.95!!! I couldn't believe it, I was going to order Thriller and pay a hell of a lot more than 99p for it.

Even better, the 10cc album (1975, contains I'm Mandy Fly Me, Art For Arts Sake) is not only like brand new, but this is a seriously good quality piece of vinyl, even the cover looks better quality than most. It's Mercury and on the back it says it's Super De Luxe. Would not be suprised if this album was worth a few pound. Needless to say the sound quality is awesome.

Just looked it up. There's a mint condition one for sale for £7.99, so okay, I haven't quite struck gold but hey, still got a bargain!!

Oh, forgot, I walked into the next charity store and picked up Huey Lewis & The News - Sports for 50p.
