Who sung that?

Heres the problem - in the seventies and eighties, I used to make a habit of recording music from radio stations because I was too skint to buy the latest singles and having recently listened to some of these tapes, realised that its time that I purchased some of the recordings but the problem is that I don't know the name or artists of some of the records - if you had a recording of a song but did'nt know the artists name or the title of the song, how would you find out?

You could try a google search for some of the lyrics. I usually pic a fairly unique line in a song and come up trumps on most occasions.

there used (is?) to be some service that you could ring up while a certain song was playing and it would be able to identify it.. not sure if it still exists but i remember someone on another forum saying that they were quite impressed by how good it was - am sure a quick google will come up with some info if you cant find the answer through lyrics.

www.shazam.com . Everyone who's used it seems impressed. Not particularly cheap, but highly effective if the lyrics search doesn't come up trumps.

Thanks to all of your valued input, in the space of two hours, I'v managed to put names and faces to all but two previously unknown track titles
I could'nt find the authors/musicians of three tracks - mainly due to the fact that they'r instrumentals but lets see if you guys can help here - the first is the catchy theme to chris evans TGIF show from a couple of years back - some sort of retro sixties piece, totally catchy!
The second is from the eighties, an acoustic guitar led piece by someone called nicolas d'angelis (that may not be the correct spelling as I'v only heard his name over the radio) and the last is the end suite from the film 'Alien'.

The piece of music from TGIF was originally from the TV Series Man In A Suitcase and was composed by Ron Grainer. The actor in the series was Richard Bradford as an ex-CIA agent now a detective in the UK it was a top series of its time and worth looking out for.

I think the end title music was Romantic Symphony No2 by Howard Hanson. Also the main title was by Jerry Goldsmith but was taken from an earlier film he scored for which was the 1962 film Freud (as in Sigmund). Nice piece of scoring for that film.

there is a service, where you play a 10 second or so clip of the music you need to know the name of over the phone and it gets you the answer.

Garrett - just to let you know that I got the theme from 'man in a suitcase' from an album I picked up yesterday from hmv called 'Cult Fiction' which has to be one of the greatest albums ever - where else could you get the themes to such kitsch classics like -
Bullit, the Persuaders, the Prisoner, Space 1999, man in a suitcase ,the champions, randall and hopkirk (origional), joe 90 , jason king, the Baron (whoaa, well over the top!!), Department S, and many many other themes - totally magnificent and totally over the top!!

KItch is the the new word for great?

Personaly I think the best theme tunes came from the 60s shows, they seemed to have a dynamic quality missing from later decades.
Do you know which are the original themes and which are re-recordings?
I liked Edwin Astley themes as well as Ron Grainer. I.E. Danger Man, The Baron, Department S and Man In A Suitcase etc.

actually, its not the word 'kitsch' which bothers me in my last post, but the word that preceeds it - which I'v now corrected!
As for the music, today, it seems no-one likes to take chances so music tends to be nice, safe and generic - 60's and 70's were ripe for classics, the americans ruled the roost in the eighties with such classics like the A team, St Elsewhere, Hill street blues, WKRP Cincinatti, Greatest american hero and a zillion others but creativity seems to have petered out from the 90's on.
