Steeley Dan

Just been getting into Steeley Dan.
So I have been listening to some tracks on the Internet but I am not sure which album to buy?

Is Aja worth getting?

Please help someone who is going through a musical taste change i.e. Getting older!

I'm not a big Steely Dan fan, but www.highfidelityreview.com reports that the following albums are to be released on SACD:

Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill (MCA)

Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy (MCA)

Steely Dan - Katy Lied (MCA)

Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic (MCA)

Steely Dan - The Royal Scam (MCA)

LOL....gets to us all(age that is).

Aja is for many, the high point of their career, with a superb array of musicians, incl Larry Carlton and many others from the US session lists.

Gaucho is also excellent, and of the newer releases,2 Vs Nature is probably the best.

If you like what you hear, the you will also like Donald Fagen's solo releases,
The Nightfly,and Kamakiriad.

Also have a browse around www.steelydan.com where Walter Becker has quite a bit to say, some of it very amusing,a lot of it very warped!

"Remastered - the best of Steely Dan then and now" was my starting point; can't go wrong with this and it's got a good band history in the sleeve notes which would help you make an informed choice on buying albums.

Since then I've bought

Aja - very good. Lots of funky rhythms.
The Royal Scam - excellent. My fave.
Katy Lied - Not so good but Michael McDonald sings on a few tracks so worth it.
I've also got Fagen's Nightfly - love this, when I was growing up I would hear tracks from this on late night radio, very evocative. Think "Midnight Caller" with Jack Killian.

Speaking of Michael McDonald, I just bought the Best of the Doobie Brothers the other day - musical tastes change indeed! (P.S. my favourite artists are still DJ Shadow, Beastie Boys, Jamiroquai, Beta Band)

Thanks for the advice guys.
Think I'll go for a greatest hits as this should give me a good taster through out the years.

Thanks

Aja is my personal fave but Gaucho comes close. They're all worth buying in theor own right really. Not a duff album in the catalogue.

Quite agree!

Wouldn't advise "Greatest Hits". Tracks are best listened to in context.
