Re: Pink floyd

Love Pink Floyd. Saw them first at wembley stadium in the 80's. Then again in wembley arena (PULSE). Shows were both excellent.

Saw Roger waters in Berlin after the wall was taken down. That was an experience.. More recently seen Roger waters in Hyde Park do Dark Side of the Moon. Excellent sound quality & LOUD saw Roger waters also in wembley arena (i think??) either before hyde park or after. sorry memories not like what it never was

Have most of there stuff on cd. used to have a few vinyl's but think i lost them along the way...

Dave Gilmour & Pink Floyds recent Live in Gdansk CD is brilliant

Thanks.

I think Pink Floyd were absolutely wonderful - a very talented lot. I only saw them once in concert, which was in Munich in probably 1987. Unfortunately, the ticket cost me a lot of money and the concert was diabolical. It was in the (open air) Olympia Stadium, and the accoustics were dreadful. I wish I'd spent the money on a number of discs instead - or on something else!

If you've got a half-decent 5.1 speaker system and an SACD player, I'd really recommend you get the Dark Side of the Moon album. If you have a DVD player linked to a multi-speaker system, there is also a DVD-A version around out there which I believe is 4.1.

Re: Pink floyd

Went to one of the Pulse shows in '94 but it was at Earls Court. Are you sure they played Wembley? Anyway, I spent many years dreaming of another Floyd tour.

DGs Live in Gdansk really is excellent as was On an Island, his 2006 solo album. In the 'full-monte' LiG box-set there is a DD5.1 mix of OaI which is very much worth having.

For a long time RWs In The Flesh DVD was the only Floydy concert available on DVD and I still reckon it's worth looking out for. There's a nice version of Dogs too.

David Gilmour and Brian May were responsible for me taking up the guitar. I hope we haven't seen the last of DG as his recent work has been very good indeed.

Re: Pink floyd

Saw Floyd on the Wall tour 80-81. Still the best concert I have ever seen. We were sat facing the stage at Earls Court and had a perfect view of the wall going up - and down!

The ticket was pricey, for back then, so nothing changed there over the years. The average was about £4.50, Floyd's cost (if memory serves) about £7.50. So, a fairly hefty premium.

Well worth it though..........

And they still lost money on that tour. Well, everyone except Rick Wright anyway. It was a massively expensive show.

Re: Pink floyd

Yeah. pretty certain i saw floyd at wembley stadium.. open air... here we go,

The two remaining members of the band, David Gilmour and Nick Mason, along with Richard Wright, had just won a legal battle against Roger Waters and the future of the group was uncertain. Having the success of The Wall shows to live up to, the concerts' special effects were more impressive than ever. The initial "promotional tour" was extended, and finally lasted almost two years, ending in 1989 after playing around 200 concerts to about 5.5 million people in total, including 3 dates at Madison Square Garden (5-7 October 1987) and 2 nights at Wembley Stadium (5-6 August 1988). The tour took Pink Floyd to various exotic locations they had never played before such as shows in the forecourt of the Palace of Versailles, Moscow's Olympic Stadium, and Venice, despite fears and protests that the sound would damage the latter city's foundations. The band played in Australia and Japan, where they haven't played since 1972.

but i think it was earls court i saw them doing the devision bell tour in oct '94.

two great nights from what i remember

Re: Pink floyd

That's what confused me. You said it was the Pulse tour but they didn't play Wembley on the Pulse (Division Bell) tour. Btw, Wembley Arena is an indoor venue - different thing to the Stadium.

I wish I'd seen the 87-88 tour too. Gilmour's tone sounds fab on the Delicate Sound... album.

Re: Pink floyd

Love the Floyd, but I got into them long after their split and demise - only about 5yrs ago actually!

Couple of guys I worked with went to the PULSE show at Earls Court, the one that the DVD was filmed at, and I wish I had been there! One of the most amazing light shows I've ever seen!

I recently saw Roger Waters at Earls Court, doing one show of his own stuff and classic Floyd, then the second half was Dark Side Of The Moon in it's entirety, and he was joined by Nick Mason for that half, which was pretty cool....

Re: Pink floyd

I was brought up on Pink Floyd (I'm forty) and have been a fan all my life!

Saw them (or rather didn't!) at the notorious 'collapsing seats' gig at Earls court in 1994!

Obviously that was cancelled and we went back another night to the re-scheduled gig. Fantastic!

Worth seeing if you're a PF fan are the Australian Pink Floyd. I've seen them three times and they're pretty damn good!

Re: Pink floyd

my first and only time i saw pink floyd was the last ever show at live 8 when roger waters rejoined them onstage for the first time in 25 years. only four songs but it was worth the trip all the way for that, and they sounded great. i wasn't such a fan of the post waters floyd, particularly the live shows with more non band members on stage than original members. before the wall shows there was only normally the four of them onstage apart from dick parry guesting on sax, so having all the extra members to flesh out the sound just killed it for me, especially having the extra percussion

i got to see dave and rick during dave's last solo tour and that was really great. i was more of a waters fan but he's never played within reasonable distance from me, and having been to hyde park before, i don't fancy seeing another gig there. i'm all for small gigs and being down the front, so standing miles from the stage does nothing for me, especially outside

Although they're very good musicians perhaps they just can't match Roger Waters songwriting abilities, so they make a living playing his songs. It's been done with some success before.

Looks like I can claim the earliest gig so far..... Summer 1969, Birmingham Town Hall just before the release of Ummagumma, I think it may have been one of Dave Gilmores early gigs when they left Syd behind. Wonderful night, still remember Rogers scream in Careful With That Axe Eugene

Bah! All venues way to far for me, nothing in Europe which is a shame, unless more venues are to be added.

If only they'd re-release The Wall as a 30th Anniversary SACD, wishful thinking I know, especially as nobody really knows if they long completed WYWH SACD will ever see the light of day

Love Pink Floyd but never got to see them live.

I have the DVD-A version of DSOTM and I reckon it's a better mix then the SACD version on the anniversary CD.

Another vote for the Aussie Floyd! I have seen them half a dozen times and they are not your average "tribute band" by any means. Full versions of DSOTM, Wish You Were Here and last year they even did the whole of The Wall! They are as near as you will get to classic Floyd live these days. Check them out.

Floyd, a great band, but utterly pointless with Waters, their driving force. They ended up being just a Gilmour solo project, directionless and way below average.

It always amused me that they were referred to as a "hippy" band. I don't know how, most of the work from Dark Side onwards was very dark, had a real nasty biting under-current to it, and quintessentially English in its approach.

It always amused me that they were referred to as a "hippy" band. .
Early Floyd with Syd. To me that was the original and only Floyd. The later music was class, but to me it never had that strange, off kilter feel of the earlier music. It was trippy (referred to as psychadelia) and geeky at the same time. Astronomy Domine, Interstellar overdrive and even the track missed from the UK edition, Emily were all brilliant. The album reflects the time and the time was 1967 when the Kaftan and loons ruled the Earth.

Peace and Flowers all round.
