Omd

I was talking to mate about some of the music i listen to. I'll give most things a shot, as he knows. I said i even had the sugerbabes on the other night, as Diane had just bought it, and i thought i'd see what they're album was like as i got ready to go out.

He said ooohhh Mr eclectic listening to the sugerbabes
So i said your music collection is stook in the 80's, and told him OMD were a bit allen partridge. He defended OMD, i said i'd rather listen to the suger babes.

When i think of omd now, i think they was up there arse. I hate that overblown 80's crap

what do you guys think of OMD?

Poncy, pretentious, electro-poop. No more, no less. I couldn't stand the early 80's cack either. Or the mid, or late 80's cack come to think of it!!!!

At the time that whole 80's "gay phase" thing, linked to the eras's "Music", had me worried!!! The muso press made all us hard lovin', hard rockin', guys think we were the qu**r(**) ones!!! In context perhaps we WERE!!!!

(*note*) Before anyone says it, I am NOT anti gay!!!

Never been my cup of tea but OMD are (much like Simple Minds) condemned to be judged by their later, lightweight direction (indeed, Partridge-tastic) rather than the Kraftwerk-influenced direction of their debut material (released on Factory with a sleeve by Peter Saville I think).

I suspect your mate's into the later stuff in which case, he needs sorting out. If he's into the really early stuff, it might be worth a listen.

Some of those bands may have started in the late 70's but were at the height in the 80's.

Knowing my mate, he'll have the best of OMD

Depends what you mean by heights!!! Only U2, talk talk, and, well, those two really, of the late 70's bands weren't already established by the 80's. Talking heads had already released three albums!!

The 80's were evidently great as I was born during them. QED really.

So now they have to be groups started in the 80s, not just producing music. You really must be more specific (all in an John Cleese style voice).

So thats Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana....as it is, by your own admission that Metallica and Guns and Roses were around during the 80s, I am unable to put the 80s music into room 101.

I think it's all that new romantic crap that gives the 80's a bad name

Well, it was a decent attempt Mr. Overkill, but your list was a bit off the cuff, I suspect.

Husker Du, Talk Talk and Replacements as 70s ???

And 'Remain in Light' (by which all others must be judged) was 1980....a single album that made the whole 80s worthwhile.

T'was indeed! I'm sorry Karkus but the few bands you mentioned (who actually were from the 80's) can't atone for a largely worthless decade of music. I was pointing out (for fun!) that many of the bands/artists you mentioned, Kark old man, weren't from, or even at their peak in the 80's.

Remain in light is an excellent album but it shines like a beacon in a sea of crap!!! I have a fairly large album collection, but bands formed in the 80's and 90's don't figure that much in it, simply because far to few were able to command my respect at the time. Room 101, here come the 80's music scene..........

Sad but true.....................

Well, my musical leanings were shaped as a youth by the whole punk/post-punk movement so I have a heap of stuff from the 80s throughout my collection...

...so that'll be me rescuing the 80's music scene out of Room 101 then.
