Omd

I was talking to mate about some of the music i listen to. I'll give most things a shot, as he knows. I said i even had the sugerbabes on the other night, as Diane had just bought it, and i thought i'd see what they're album was like as i got ready to go out.

He said ooohhh Mr eclectic listening to the sugerbabes
So i said your music collection is stook in the 80's, and told him OMD were a bit allen partridge. He defended OMD, i said i'd rather listen to the suger babes.

When i think of omd now, i think they was up there arse. I hate that overblown 80's crap

what do you guys think of OMD?

Poncy, pretentious, electro-poop. No more, no less. I couldn't stand the early 80's cack either. Or the mid, or late 80's cack come to think of it!!!!

At the time that whole 80's "gay phase" thing, linked to the eras's "Music", had me worried!!! The muso press made all us hard lovin', hard rockin', guys think we were the qu**r(**) ones!!! In context perhaps we WERE!!!!

(*note*) Before anyone says it, I am NOT anti gay!!!

Never been my cup of tea but OMD are (much like Simple Minds) condemned to be judged by their later, lightweight direction (indeed, Partridge-tastic) rather than the Kraftwerk-influenced direction of their debut material (released on Factory with a sleeve by Peter Saville I think).

I suspect your mate's into the later stuff in which case, he needs sorting out. If he's into the really early stuff, it might be worth a listen.

Some of those bands may have started in the late 70's but were at the height in the 80's.

Knowing my mate, he'll have the best of OMD

Depends what you mean by heights!!! Only U2, talk talk, and, well, those two really, of the late 70's bands weren't already established by the 80's. Talking heads had already released three albums!!

So now they have to be groups started in the 80s, not just producing music. You really must be more specific (all in an John Cleese style voice).

So thats Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana....as it is, by your own admission that Metallica and Guns and Roses were around during the 80s, I am unable to put the 80s music into room 101.

Well, it was a decent attempt Mr. Overkill, but your list was a bit off the cuff, I suspect.

Husker Du, Talk Talk and Replacements as 70s ???

And 'Remain in Light' (by which all others must be judged) was 1980....a single album that made the whole 80s worthwhile.

T'was indeed! I'm sorry Karkus but the few bands you mentioned (who actually were from the 80's) can't atone for a largely worthless decade of music. I was pointing out (for fun!) that many of the bands/artists you mentioned, Kark old man, weren't from, or even at their peak in the 80's.

Remain in light is an excellent album but it shines like a beacon in a sea of crap!!! I have a fairly large album collection, but bands formed in the 80's and 90's don't figure that much in it, simply because far to few were able to command my respect at the time. Room 101, here come the 80's music scene..........

Sad but true.....................

Well, my musical leanings were shaped as a youth by the whole punk/post-punk movement so I have a heap of stuff from the 80s throughout my collection...

...so that'll be me rescuing the 80's music scene out of Room 101 then.

OMD weren't that bad on the first couple of albums - I was into the Human League and OMD before they were well known. Didn't really think much of OMDs later stuff.

Has anyone heard ' Orchestral Manoevures In The Darkness ' ? It's Darkness tracks done OMD style..... heard stuff of the EP on 6Music about a month ago but haven't been able to track down a copy.

Erics in Liverpool, sat on stage munching a cheeseburger along with Pete Burns from Probe Records, well before he spun us around with Dead Or Alive, back then OMD was trendy Industrial Design and Industrial Pop, two fellas and a Revox A77 playing drum loops which they named Winston.
When Electricity, Enola Gay, Joan Of Arc and stuff became massive hits both sides of Atlantic it was like seeing your next door neighbour win the lottery but even less likely.
Still the success they had is as nothing compared to Mr Macs wonderful contribution to Kylie Minogue's musical triumph, which I can't get out of my head.

Beats me!!!
I kept it in reserve, for the knock out punch

Now stop bleating, you even admitted at least three of the bands produced great music..............so your sweeping statement 'all 80s music is crap' has been proved incorrect by your own admission. In future you should be more accurate in your targets for scorn

You shall now be banished to a room where you will be made to listen to Joe Dolce on repeat for ever.

no seriously..... 'Orchestral Manoevures In The Darkness'
it's pretty hysterical (though I'm sure the joke will wear thin eventually...)
If you can imagine Grace Jones' version of 'warm leatherette' but closer to the original version by 'the normal' you'll be getting closer to it. pure madness. genius madness... but madness just the same.

hey... there's an 80s act... madness.
discuss.

I have just checked OM in the Darkness and its the name for their recent LP single EP thingy by The Darkness.

It contains Get your hands off, Love on the Rocks and I believe in a thing called love.

So nil poi for that. Now can I have your projector so you can better concentrate on musical issues

Im not discussing Suggs, no matter how many people think its great, amiable/good-Natured , it sounds just like Chas and Dave to me.

Please don't mention Joy Division in the same sentence as people like OMD !!
Ian Curtis killed himself in 1980 so they couldn't have been an 80's band anyway. Besides which Joy Division were superb - and still are
