| Re: So what's your favourite bootleg???
Genesis at Wembley Stadium July 4 1987. Genesis played an unprecedented four nights there at the end of their ten month Invisible Touch tour. The set had undergone various changes throughout the the tour and by the time they came to Wembley (having already played Hampden Park and Roundhay Park) they were in top form (men of their age rarely sound in such peak condition after such a marathon run of dates!). Old songs like In The Cage and In That Quiet Earth (enjoying its first outing since 1977) sit well alongside newer numbers like Tonight, Tonight, Tonight and That's All.
At this point in their career, the band could do no wrong. Practically everybody had a copy of the new album and the stadium was filled with new fans whose enthusiasm for the show was clearly evident on this performance.
The recording I have is a pre-fm version of the show that went out on Radio One all those years ago.
I have many, many Genesis bootlegs from every stage in their career and whilst I can't claim to have a favourite bootleg of theirs, this would certainly be one of them (it's up there with Genesis at The Lyceum in 1980, The Liverpool Empire in 1975 and Montreal in 1974).
Favourite bootleg of all time, though, would be Frank Sinatra's final public appearance at Palm Springs, February 1995. He performed a short set, starting with I've Got The World On A String and ending with The Best Is Yet To Come. He was well into his eighties at this point in his career, yet you wouldn't have thought it to hear him. Strong delivery, flawless voice. This is essential listening: a legend bowing out gracefully.
