New Jackson Single and Album

Quote:
Sony Music has confirmed that it plans to release a new Michael Jackson album and single.
The song 'This Is It' will be made available on October 12, two weeks prior to the release of the concert film of the same name, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The track will appear on a two-disc compilation - also titled This Is It - that will follow on October 26.
"Disc one will feature the original album masters of some of Michael's biggest hits arranged in the same sequence as they appear in the film," according to the record label.
"The disc ends with two versions of the never-released 'This Is It'. This song is featured in the film's closing sequence and includes backing vocals by Michael's brothers, the Jacksons."
The second disc will feature "previously unreleased versions" late King Of Pop's catalogue of hits. It will also include a spoken word poem entitled Planet Earth and a 36-page commemorative booklet with "exclusive photos of Michael from his last rehearsal".
Former Sony CEO Tommy Mottola recently said that fans can expect to enjoy new music from the popstar for "decades to come".
looking forward to hearing this

Re: New Jackson Single and Album

Hi,

Instead of just having one new song and masters of his classic songs. Why didn't he put brand new songs on the album.

I think were going to be ripped off again.
I'm sure MJ has 100's of unreleased songs hidden in his vaults that fans would love to hear.

There's probably about 10 albums in the pipeline, release 1 per year & it may just pay off some of his debts. Release everything on 1 album & it'll be in the bargain buckets by next christmas.

his management have said he has 100s of unheard songs in the vaults, but if that's the case, why haven't they been released before? he's not released anything in about 10 years apart from a load of reissues and compilations, and it seems most of the best unreleased tracks ended up on those. there are a bunch of other unreleased tracks floating around collectors but there's no unheard of songs that are much better than this

you have to ask the question, if he had 100s of unreleased songs, why are the unreleased? surely if they were any good they would have released them. and if this is the best they can do as an example of what they do have, then it's not a good sign of things to come, a 27 year old song that was originally given away to another singer to release 18 years ago as it wasn't good enough to release before

the new compilation is a real rip off. i thought they were going to put out a "live" album using parts of the rehearsals, not the same old hits yet again, especially not after releasing a hits compilation only about 3 months ago

It appears Michael "stole" the song from Paul Anka.

I read a report a while ago about the unreleased tracks

saying that many of them were not of good enough quality to make a album right away.

My guess is that we will hear them in the future (most likely as samples) , once they have the time to actually work on them.

Re: New Jackson Single and Album

Most artists do exactly the same, they maybe write 30 tracks, record 18 of them in the studio & choose which 12 to put on an album. You can't record every song or release every recording when some are obviously stronger than others. No-one will ever hear a groundbreaking new(old) Michael Jackson track because there simply isn't any, they'll just be the odd track like this one which sounds dated & not as good as others he released in that period.
I wouldn't get too excited about all this, it's selling old boots to make money only.

Re: New Jackson Single and Album

Quite right.

But I wouldn't be surprised if his new album 'This Is It' goes straight to number 1 in the charts. Even though there is only 1 new song on the album, a poem and the rest are his classics.

But I still feel were being ripped off. What the fans and the public want is unreleased songs that we have never heard of by MJ not his back catalogue of his old hits.

Hi,

It's not bad, but I wish it was more beaty driven like Beat It or Smooth Criminal.

Re: New Jackson Single and Album

It's a nice tune (expected nothing else from Mr. Anka) but the vocals from MJ sound very tinny compared to the rest of the backing/instruments.

Kind of reminded me of "Real Love" - Beatles where an old recording of John Lennon was found - poor quality, then taken along to the remaining members and Jeff Lynne for them to sing/play along to etc.

A scratchy low khz acapella overlaid onto fresh backing vocals and music.

Surely in this day and age they could have equalized Michael's voice?

Really like the song though.

Re: New Jackson Single and Album

i'm sure they spent a lot of time working on the demo and that was the best quality. there is a limit to what you can do. the original tape may have sounded much worse

i think it worked better for the beatles, partly as it was the first time this was done in such a way, and partly as the song was better. also, the beatles experimented with distorted vocals for a while on revolver and pepper etc so it wasn't so unusual for the end result to sound a bit strange, whereas MJ's tracks and vocals have always been clear and some would say overproduced, so to hear unfinished vocals is more of a surprise. the main thing that's missing is the backing vocals from MJ, as he would usually layer a series of his own vocals, and that's the most noticable thing that's missing from this track, although some people will just notice it sounds different without realising why

latoya says that he would never have released the track like this and she's not happy about it's release. i also read recently about a 2cd set of unreleased tracks that are supposedly better than this, but if they had 2 cds of better tracks, surely they could have released a better one first and hidden this on the album instead

Re: New Jackson Single and Album

Regarding "Real Love" (sorry to go OT for a moment) - I always wondered why they didn't continue the missing piano segments. When Lennon sings there is clearly a (low quality recording) of a piano, it then comes in and out unnaturally throughout the song due to samples used.

Again, surely somebody could have filled those piano parts - it's not hard to produce a lower quality and blend it in over the missing segments.

Great song though

i suppose so. when he announced the tour i mentioned elsewhere that he would have released that at a single, as i knew back then that it was the name of a MJ outtake from around 84/85 (turns out it was written in 83), but with what's happened they could have released another first single sooner and then followed up with the title track of the movie to coincide with the dvd release - that is if they have so many great unreleased tracks as they are trying to suggest

i wonder why he didn't finish the track or rerecord it this year though, so he could have released it to coincide with the shows that were about to start?

there were at least two different demos of real love, one with piano and one with guitar, but i think they were just recorded on a tape recorder and not multi track. i think there was a bootleg of a few different versions of the track, and i think the two main demos might have been officially released on the lennon boxset, so it was probably intentional, as you say it could have easily been reproduced, and they could have laid the better quality rerecording over the original to further hide that patchwork

there's only 5 tracks you won't already have, two of which are slightly different versions of this is it, and one is a spoken word poem, making up 4 tracks on the second disc

the beat it demo is only 2 and a half minutes, interesting to listen to but it's not up to the same amount of repeated listening as it's more of a sketch/draft of the track. the first studio demo with live drums was supposed to sound a lot rockier

they could have also put on one of the other demo's of billie jean, like the second studio demo, or the full version of the lady is mine with the extra verse. i don't know why they didn't make a second disc full of demos for the thriller 25 edition instead of the awful remixes. marvin gaye, fleetwood mac etc have these great legacy editions full of great alternate versions and demo's and MJ gets a bunch of half hearted reissues and rehashes. the demo of wanna be starting something is a different version to the one that you might have heard before

i thought at first they were going to put the live versions of the tracks from the movie on this release, but sticking the same stuff that's already been reissued this year is just cashing in

there is also the remix cd, christmas cd and stripped cd out so far or out shortly
