3 outstanding albums in a row?

I've been on a Def Leppard retrofest this evening and reckon their first 3 albums are all outstanding. It got me thinking of others too. In my view Iron Maiden did it with their first 3 as well. Who do you think has managed this most difficult feat?

Re: 3 outstanding albums in a row?

Slightly subjective as always but here goes.

Roger Waters - The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, Radio Kaos and Amused to Death

Nirvana - Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero.

edit just reread the question and amended my choices accordingly. i just looked at the prince example and so got it all wrong

Queensryche did 5 in a row:

Queensryche E.P.
The Warning
Rage For Order
Operation:Mindcrime
Empire

And have been on the downward turn ever since!!!

U.F.O did, IMHO, 6 in a row:

Phenomenon
Force It
No Heavy Pettin'
Lights Out
Obsession
Strangers In The Night

Re: 3 outstanding albums in a row?

some excellent albums so far - (although I have never been convinced by Radio KAOS, I don't think it has dated well).

I'd go for
Dark Side of the Moon
Wish You Were Here
Animals

And a personal choice of
Bad Religion : Suffer, No Control, Against the Grain.
Some may say they are all the same album, but they are all superb in my book.

Despite UFO being my favourite band of all time, I am going to have to disagree with you. No Heavy Petting is certainly not outstanding and therefore the chain of 6 is broken. Sure, there are outstanding parts to it but as a whole album, unfortunately not. Still, UFO do indeed manage a run of 3.

Having said that, I am not sure that a live album should count. The point of a run of 3 is that a band were great enough to produce enough material of outstanding standard to fill 3 albums. I would argue that it should be new material.

So, under these [my] rules the mighty force of Schenker/Mogg/Parker/Way does NOT manage to get on the list.

Damn it.

Bob Dylan, basically all of his early work.

Nothing actually.
As others have made lists longer than 3 albums (some very questionable, e.g. Queensryche), here's the correct one.

Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain
Around the Wold in a Day
Parade
Sign 'O' the Times
(The Black Album)
Lovesexy

Which makes a total of 8 (9) and all within one decade.

out of that list you could have a load of 3 great albums in a row

DM/controversy/1999
controversy/1999/purple rain
1999/purple rain/ATWIAD
PR/ATWIAD/parade
ATWIAD/parade/SOTT
parade/SOTT/lovesexy

you could have one more if you included the black album, but it wasn't released until 1994, and if you included all the other unreleased stuff we would be here forever, although the black album was at least released in it's original tracklisting

Officially, yes.
I got my (vinyl) copy in October 1988.

You a fan, unique?
If so, quick question, what's your favourite non-album track?

favourite track not on a prince album, but presumably released? she's always in my hair is one. how come u don't call me anymore, erotic city, shockadelica, feel u up, are some of my other faves

unreleased tracks, in all my dreams, empty room (the 93 version of the song was released but the 94 version was better, and the live 2002 version was excellent too), moonbeam levels, electric intercourse, others here with us, heaven, in a large room with no light, are a few

i omitted songs that he gave away to other people that were released on their albums, like love thy will be done, manic monday, sex shooter, eternity, g spot, love bizzarren, mutiny, desire, nothing compares 2 u, etc

I've always thought the entire "welcome to the beautiful experience" was, for lack of a better word, an experience.

I would add 101, which he gave to Sheena Easton.

Ok, I'll plump for WINGER this time around, seeing as the rules have changed:

Winger
In The Heart Of The Young
Pull

Or another W, Whitesnake, from their classy blues/rock filled days:

Ready 'n Willing
Come And Get It
Saints & Sinners

I wouldn't call Hemispheres a classic but easily could go for: Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures then Subdivisions.

I would add 101, which he gave to Sheena Easton.
do you mean the bootleg of the full live show from 14/02/94 at paisley park, or the tv show? the full show is one of the best boots there is. he was filming the show, but they had problems filming so nothing went to plan, and he ended up jamming for the last half of the gig. for some bizarre reason he sold the tape to a dutch radio station, along with another tape of unreleased songs, and that's where the boots came from

the uptown mix of 101 is the best version, it's only on the 12", not the cd single which had a house mix, it has a lot of extra guitar like the live 87 version of sign o the times. i also have a promo only 12" that has unreleased mixes, they aren't bad, but not that great

prince gave away a hell of a lot of great music to other artists, the time and sheila e albums, the family album, jill jones, were some of his best work

As others have made lists longer than 3 albums (some very questionable, e.g. Queensryche), here's the correct one.

Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain
Around the Wold in a Day
Parade
Sign 'O' the Times
(The Black Album)
Lovesexy

Which makes a total of 8 (9) and all within one decade.
all class

The bootleg (bought it at a fan convention a few months later).
I didn't know the rest of the story.
