BMG Are Evil

Firstly

Dido No Angel

This doesn't play in my DVD player says it is a CD but obviously it can't be as it is not red book

So I computer copied it!

Next my wife one a CD and again "NO DISC" comes up.

Copy protection listed on it

So what to do - yes made another copy on the PC - they did the copy protection to stop this I have to copy to play them.

Anyone got BMGs phone number?

I'm with you mate.

Load of tosh the copy protection.

I download albums that are listed as copy protection rather than buy them.

I still buy non copy protected albums however.

All the CD producers are bas****s, why just single out BMG? I think "copy protection" using "soft sectors" should be challenged as you're effectively being sold potentially defective goods. Anyone got 10,000 grand lying around and fancing taking on the RIAA?

Make a point andreturn those disks back to the shop as defective. They'll get the message.

Dear Sir/Madam

Many thanks for taking the time to write to BMG.

Could you confirm what system this will not play in so I can get this
investigated for you.

We do not hold any non copy protected discs I am afraid so I am not in a
position to send you one.

Kind regards

Stuart
I replied mentioning red book, Watchdog, Phillips, and not buying BMG anymore

I have decided to buy a BMG from Tescos this week and swap out all their copies - I will copy it for myself.

When they have 100s of returns maybe they will stop

thing is, these Cd's with copy-protection, don't actually say "Compact Disc, Digital Audio" ( i think it says IIRC) on them. for discs to show the CD logo, they must conform to the red book standard. I should imagine they'd be breaking rules if they did.

since they don't show the CD-DA logo, why should they work with CD-Da players??

Unfortunately it's not just BMG...Sony,Universal and all the other major labels are at it as well, usually without any real message to that effect on the disc, other than tiny print, somewhere where it can hardly be read.

BMG did have a lot of complaints re Natalie Imbruglia's "White Lillys Island" and ended up releasing two versions, one protected and one not.

I for one object to having to drag out my CD player and hook that up simply to listen to a CD that I've paid for, rather than being able to slap it in the HCPC and do the same in a much more convenient way.

I don't pirate CD's and really object to this sort of limitation on how I can play back what I've already paid for,and even worse is the sub-MP3 level playback available via a PC from the PC audio tracks on these discs.

Well, they're claiming to be something they're not. Philips might have something to say about that!!

I heard somewhere that on the rim of a copy protected cd there is an obvious lining, [which there is] and if you put masking tape over it or black it out with permanant marker [which i wouldnt try myself though] blocks out the copy control section.
I havent tried either myself though.
I take no responsibility for broken cds.

I agree with all the others

TAKE IT BACK TO THE SHOP

If enough people do this, then they will get the message but the sad fact is that most people won't.

You could of course just complain to trading standards about being sold goods that are not fit for the purpose where the shop already knew this was the case.

If the shop had sold this not knowing then fair enough BUT if the shop KNEW that the CD was not fit for purpose prior to you buying this, then they are guilty of fraud and TS will help you haul them through the courts.

But make sure you buy from one of the shops owned by a record label first.

White Flag and Will Young both copied perfectly well into ITunes for me. Just held down shift whilst closing the drawer.

By White Flag, do you mean Dido, Life for rent? I just recieved this from CD-Wow, and havn't had a chance to stick it in the HCPC yet. Will be interesting to see if I have to return it, and ask CD-Wow to put a note saying it isn't a real CD. Just had a quick look at teh packaging, and the plastic tray has the CD logo, and the booklet says at the back "this CD is carbonneutral", but no other mention that I can see.

edit: plays fine, phew!

Carbon neutral...there's an interesting concept....I assume that means no fossil fuels or other non-sustainable energy sources or products were used in it's manufacture, like the polycarbonate in the CD itself?...or maybe just that you should recycle it.

Reading more into teh blurb, dido has her very own forest, and each CD produced, teh amount of CO2 produced making it, has an equivalent number of trees planted or something.

http://www.futureforests.com/acatalo..._Dido_148.html

A good idea I guess
