Best metal album ever?

For me it has to be Machine Head with 'The Blackening'.

Absolutely incredibly and a couple of years later I still listen to it all the time. Especially Halo which I can't get enough of.

Re: Best metal album ever?

Hello fellow metal dudes

It is so hard to say what is the best metal album, everyone has their personal preferences. I have listed mine in some sort of rough sub-genre category...

Hard Rock : AC/DC - Back in Black

Thrash metal : Megadeth - Rust in Peace

Death metal : Morbid Angel - Covenant

Black metal : Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse

Grindcore : Carcass - Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious

Heavy-metal : Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind

Alternative (including nu-metal, grunge, industrial etc..) : Nirvana - Nevermind

Re: Best metal album ever?

The last time this question was posed I thought 'What exactly makes an album the best ever?'

I came to the conclusion that it is one where every time you listen to it there is not one track you would skip to listen to another.

That discounted, for me, Back in Black, Appetite For Destruction,And Justice For All and Number of the Beast, all of which were contenders.

I was left with three that I cannot split, Metallica - Master of Puppets, Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and, contravertial, Slipknot - Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses)

After seeing Evanesence at Donington in 2007 I would say yes. Great set played out against some very aggressive heckling. She has an excellent live voice.

Re: Best metal album ever?

i guess there are many sub genres of metal so i will list a few of my faves.

iron maiden - seventh son of a seventh son
nine inch nails - the downward spiral
disturbed - indestructible
marilyn manson - lest we forget (bit of a cheat that one condsidering it is a greatest hits but hey ho)

push come to shove nine inch nails or iron maiden but couldnt really narrow it down so that will have to do.

Re: Best metal album ever?

For the best extreme metal album, I'd say that Dusk... and Her Embrace by Cradle of Filth is an incredibly worthy candidate. Has anyone here listened to it? Their new stuff [2003+] isn't that good at all, but Dusk... and Her Embrace (released in 1996) is an absolute classic!

Sorry, I should also say that Cradle of Filth have faced numerous genre debates, but they're currently seen as an extreme metal band. I know that other extreme metal genres include thrash, death and black metal, etc., but by 'extreme metal' I meant the genre that Cradle belong to... which is still confusing. I'd say their genre was more along the lines of symphonic black metal, or was, at least. Dusk... and Her Embrace is probably the best album from that particular genre.

Re: Best metal album ever?

Easy one to answer for me this...

Metallica - And Justice For All

I'd still like a re-mastered and re-mixed version though.

Us metalheads love catagorising our music I would classify CoF as black metal although their music is symphonic and gothic influenced. Completely different to lets say the likes of Marduk or Enthroned.

Personally, my fav CoF is Cruelty and the Beast.

Re: Best metal album ever?

Deftones - White Pony

Nah i'm guessing you Metal Heads would class that as Nu-Metal

I get confused with all the genre's of Metal.

I would say these are my favourite Metal Albums

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Opeth - Blackwater Park

Cult Of Luna - Eternal Kingdom

Deftones - White Pony

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile

Those are my favourites

Deftones

Cruelty is a sweet album . The reason I like Dusk more is because I consider it almost 'haunting'; it has that vibe and sound to it. The artwork really sums the album up. Their new stuff is rubbish, though.

Re: Best metal album ever?

I could never in a million years narrow it down to just one album.

A few of the best in my opinion (off the top of my head)

Meshuggah - Nothing
Tool - Lateralus
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Dream Theater - Images and Words

Probably Nevermore's This Godless Endeavour. Most of the tracks have a lot going for them, even if the lyrics can be a bit ridiculous. Back when I used a portable CD player, I had the TGE CD in it for weeks...

You should check out Temple of the Dog. Was a "tribute" put out by members of Soundgarden & Pearl Jam. Temple of the Dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'll have to have a think about my fave albums, i don't get much chance to listen to a full album, maybe half of one on the way to work, half on the way back, but my missus always moans about the older stuff i play. If it ain't Metallica or Linkin Park she'll generally moan about it :D

Somewhere Along The Highway takes the cake for me. Perhaps not quite as 'metal' as Eternal Kingdom, but as an all round record I think it triumphs. Dim especially makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end each time I listen to it.

As for Deftones, top band. I think Around The Fur is probably my favourite of theirs, but White Pony is a very close second.

Personally its all about The Beyond when it comes to Cult of Luna, Watchtower particularly is amazing.

As to my favourite metal album I think Aenima by Tool takes the winning spot by a nose, I might change my mind and say Lateralus after the next listen either way its a Tool album.
