Thanks: Gave 21, Got 48 | Which SACD/DVD-A Disc?
Santa's bringing me a universal player
Obviously I'll be checking out music that suits my tastes, but from
a purely "let's demo the new format to the best of it's abilities" viewpoint, what are the best demo discs currently around?
Either SACD or DVD-A, I'm not fussed, and regardless of musical genre, just want to hear what 5.1 music can sound like done properly.
Thanks guys |

Pink Floyds, Dark Side of the moon. It's the only SACD i've got that even marginally impresses me. Best DVD-A, Harvest by Neil Young. Most of the rest i've had have ended up on ebay............

I have:
REM - Automatic for the People
Missy Eliot: So Addictive
Metallica: Metallica
The Doors: LA Woman
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
Of the above I would really recommend Fleetwood Mac and the REM one.
Got em all from Play.com
Enjoy

Joe, What do you think of LA Woman? I had that, and was disappointed. Seemed more gimicky than good quality?!

The Dylan SACDs I have all sound superb, both in high res stereo and multi-. I would particularly recommend Blood on the Tracks, Freewheelin, Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde.
Rumours is great (the 5.1 adds a little instrumentation here and there), Bowie's Heathen has very imaginative, non-gimmicky surround sound.
And I would add my voice to the praise for REM's Automatic...

The Tubular Bells SACD is pretty good. The 'surround' track (not sure if it's 5.1) is really interesting: it's made from the original quadrophonic master, and is a different arrangement. It's worth a listen, I reckon.

| Where can you get them from Alex2? Haven't seen them on the usual places..........
Which albums in particular, as the Vinyl originals are excellent recordings anyway, and i wouldn't bother replacing until they're done for? My Can't buy a thrill is knackered so that would be worth replacing as an experiment. Is this on SACD, DVD-A?

Cheers alex2. I was looking on vivante the other day (for 180 gram vinyl mainly!) must have missed them!! I will have a look in MVC as our local Virgins HD digital audio section is pretty poor!

Queen - The Game
I'm NOT a queen fan but the mix of "Another one Bites the Dust" is astounding. It uses the surround format without distracting from the song. Remarkable.
(B.T.W. Mike Olfield himself suggests the DVD-A version of Tublar Bells - it's the one he was most involved in re-mixing himself. Interview in a recent Hi-Fi magazine , can't remember which one!)

My local MVC had put almost all their DVD-As and SACDs in boxes under the racks for the Christmas duration. It took quite a while to find an assistant who knew where they were. This was after one of the assistants I had asked ("Do you know where your SACDs and DVD-audio discs are?") had directed me to the DVD music video section.

Stevie | I got sent to the Superbit DVD section in HMV. I think online is the only way to buy these formats for the moment....
