Great Drummer Performances

Sure, guitarists are the heroes and singers can steal a show but do you know of a specific drummer performance which stands out?

My contribution is this from Metallica at the Freddy Mercury Tribute concert at Wembley in '92. If there was ever a drummer totally "in the zone", it's here....

Re: Great Drummer Performances

you really think so?

Im probably bias, as i have never rated lars ulrich. but with a couple of timing errors at the beginning, it isn't exactly a 'great' performance. and his drumming is pretty unremarkable in itself.

that said, he does keep a tight groove for most of the song, and the drums are definitely the stand out instrument of that performance as a whole!

ill find some and get them up asap :D

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, being a drummer yourself .

I'm no lars' fanboy myself but I do rate that performance highly, for the reason it's just so much bleedin fun to watch.

Technically proficient doesn't necessarily matter to me...heck, my favourite live band is Motley Crue and NONE of them are musicians .

Re: Great Drummer Performances

A batch of freaking drum solos.

It's my own fault...I should have explained better.

Thank goodness for Anesthetise - just the kind of thing I was looking for, a song made better because of the drummer.

Neil Peart does an amazing display on the Weapon from the rush grace under pressure show. He plays along to a click track. Red secor a also has a great performance.

I suppose when it comes to performances no one can come near Buddy Rich

Another vote for Mike Portnoy here. There are plenty of highlights to choose from. Chose this as one of my favourite Dream Theater tracks

Gavin Harrison and Danny Carey are also great drummers.

Re: Great Drummer Performances

Been debated many times and is hugely dependant on exactly what is the criteria. IMO drumming, less is more, with groove and timing being more important than speed.

The drummers mentioned, even Buddy Rich are really simple 'rock school drummers' although BR has amazing groove at times.

Bonham is overated as a drummer, Lars is pretty awful, Portnoy is limited to simple single strokes around the kit and beat displacement but is quite inventive, I much prefer Carey (who has worked with tabla to perfect a different sound) or Neal Peart. Along with the others these guys suit the bands they play in, to find really great drummers you need to get into the realms of session players.

Most of the session players rearely get mentioned they simply fit into backing bands and work with the music in whatever style is required. They make it look effortless. Go and hear some one like Terry Bozzio who was chosen by Zappa, or anyone from The Screaming headless Torsos like Jojo Mayer (outstanding and inventive). If you want technical prowess then Thomas Lang will make Neil peart look like a learner !!! Bands like the Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce's backing band have incredible drummers that just groove from start to finish. Anyway, there is a few to be going on with.

A few more such as Dave Weckl, Bill Ward.......

100% agreed there mate... Drumming is a lot more about synamics than about "fast n loud"...

I must admit, haveing seen Carter Beauford (From Dave Mathews Band) live.. he's just brilliant... not only fast, but dynamics and groove spot on..

YouTube - Carter goes NUTS on the drums on Two Step outra

And (But this is more percussion) but I have such a soft spot for Blue Man group, purely because they are so different and have taken drumming to another level imho..

Been to see Jeff Beck a couple of times (20 years apart) and I have to admit that both Bozzio on the Guitar Shop Tour and his current drummer, Vinnie Colaiuta are both simply outstanding and provided, for my money, some of the best live work I have ever heard. They both seemed effortlessly impressive, subtle, intricate, driving, melodic too.

Re: Great Drummer Performances

Chris Sharrock in his Icicle Works days was pretty amazing. He still did good and varied work in his sessions/gigs with The LA's; Del Amitri; World Party; Sheryl Crow & Robbie Williams...even if he wasn't tested to his full potential with a few of those peeps.

A couple of my favourite drummers as far as feeling and rhythm are concerned are Levon Helm from The Band & Jim Keltner, who has played on so many peoples albums it's hard to list them. I know him predominantly from working with Ry Cooder.

i have a few more of his videos, but i don't think i'd be allowed to put them up. he used to be prince's drummer, in fact he's playing with prince at the montreux jazz festival on thursday, and the last time prince played live he did 3 gigs in one night in LA with a different band each night, and john was drummer during one of the shows. prince said he was like an octopus as he drummed like he had 8 arms. he drummed for justin timberlake on his last tour, and cameo and patti labelle in that past, which is what drew his attention to prince

i was asked by him to set up some drumtech things in the uk a couple of years ago, but was to involved with other things at the time

personally i preferred michael bland as prince's best drummer, but prince has his people pull down all his videos from youtube so i'm not going to bother trying to find an example, but the undertaker video was a great example, just drums, bass and guitar, a live rock/blues jam for 40 minutes at a rehearsal. he was asked to drum for madonna and michael jackson

I already beat you to that one. Though, technically he isn't a drummer any more as he gave it up because he regarded it as too easy.
Been to see him at a masterclass and he was amazing, although I got quite bored listening to a million polyrythyms played with everythin and on everything.

Seen Bozzio as well. Bozzio stood in for Dave Lombardo (no slouch either) on one of Mike Pattons tours with the Fantomas. He didn't even practice, just had a quick listen to the album and went out and played it

I've just downloaded Jojo Mayers/Nerve Prohibited Beats from amazon. Jaw dropping really, particularly if you like d&b with big synth sounds. I get the feeling i'm listening to something akin to Miles Davis for the 2Ks
