Its generally regarded that Stella is their best album, but I disagree, I think the best starting to end point you could make would be (in order)
Claro Que Si!
Solid Pleasure
Stella
You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess
Its hard to believe that Solid Pleasure is 30 years old, made in 1979, and it is a peerless piece of work.
Thats the best thing about Yello, their is no point of reference with their music. Just listen to Bimbo on Solid Pleasure, nothing else like it, and the production is amazing.
From "One Second" onwards, they favoured the drum machine sound and heavy electric percussion which makes them sound too dated even for our current 80's revival, and the absence of those elements make the first 4 albums sound relevant and fresh still (they used a real drummer, Beat Ash for some of them) |
Personally I rather like the groups late 80/early 90 sound. My personal favorite album is Baby, with Flag 2nd, and One Second in third. They totally changed their signature sound on Zebra (with only Fat Cry and Poom Shanka staying in the same vein). But as different as Zebra is from their previous releases, it was Pocket Universe where they really changed.
But even after the radical shift in style, I still really enjoy Pocket Universe, as I do all of their releases after that. They changed with the times, but are still very much Yello. Their type of music is definitely all their own, and as different as many of their newer releases are, they're still just as addictive as ever.
I am really looking forward to their newest release, I hope we see it this year.
Another of their releases that is very hard to find, is one that they did for Audi. A steel cased limited edition that was given to owners of the Audi A5. I have been searching high and low for this CD and have yet to find one to buy.
