Yep, very good.

Do you have that DVD? Its included with their Colors: Live album, which is great. The CD is the whole album played live, the DVD has all of colors live and an encore of older material.

They sound good, thanks for the recommendation. I love it when bands mash loads of random time signatures into one song.

For anyone liking this I'd also suggest checking out Architects (the british band not the Americans by the same name)

I bought 'Colors' when it was released, but absolutely hate it - hideous muso wankery of the highest order - not sure in what sense they 'blow Metallica out of the water'.

I have to say, though I denied it for years and gravitated to many more artists I cannot deny my inner progness. I'm no longer shy about it, I accept it. So, musical wankery or not I like it.

As to Metallica, well it's only my opinion as a long term 'tallica fan so don't take it to heart. I could care less either way.

Re: If you are into Opeth, Tool, Dream Theater

I saw these guys when I went over to the US for Progressive Nation 08. Not really a fan to be honest and didnt seem anywhere near worthy of sharing the stage with the other bands. Dream Theater were by far the kings of the show but the band called '3' blew Opeth and BTBAM away.
Ive since seen the band Frost* support DT live and they were incredible live - a truly awesome surprise - so another recommendation to any proggers that get the chance to see these guys, their album doesnt really do them justice, but I believe they are releasing a live dvd soon.

Listened to 3 a few times but really not sure about them. I have loads of DT, including a live DVD. Not certain what 'blow them away' would be exactly. As they all produce similar music in many ways, was it their overall performance, sound quality, or just that you preferred their music ?

I think I have answered that now I have listened to Frost* Both Opeth and BTBAM produce far more complex music (in many ways it is almost jazz, with progressions built around a theme). 3, Frost and in many ways DT produce music that is far less complex. Nowt wrong with that, but it does make complex music sound rather infuriating by comparison. It's like a complex wine, it needs drinking at the right temperature and in the right mood and many won't get what the fuss is about..........and thats not to say that a complex wine is a better wine, just different strokes for different folks. The trick is to appreciate the difference.

Re: If you are into Opeth, Tool, Dream Theater

My comparisons are purely from the live performances. I have not listened to 3 or BTBAM albums. Would the phrase 'completely kicked their asses on stage' be any clearer for you? I think you know exactly what I mean when I say that a band was blown off the stage, think you are just trying to be awkward! Dude you are talking jibberish to get a point across with all that wine crap!

3 were like a completely new experience, exciting and very mood driven music with some amazing acoustic guitar played in a way I have never really heard mixing with a heavy band before. Totally exciting.

BTBAM seemed at the time like a bunch of kids, the singer was screaming like an emo whilst walking backwards and forwards in flip flops to his keyboard and played some very uninspiring parts. The guitar player was great but they seemed like they were not all that great but they had the best guitar player in their school in the band! 10 mins in and most people went for a **** break.

Opeth where amazing and poor at the same time. Some great vocals and awesome segues with incredible melodies that then went into bog standard generic shouty metal that I had heard and since grown out of 15 years ago. Enjoyed in parts - the most enjoyable parts was the singer talking and telling stories in between songs. The missus actually fell asleep watching Opeth - how rock n roll is that!

Dream Theater stole the show with their precision, interaction with fans (apart from Myung!) just the way they controlled the stage, plus ofcourse the extras that support bands dont get - extra volume, lighting screen etc.
I am a huge Dream Theater fan and thats why I bought the ticket, so you could argue that I am being biased - but after seeing billions of bands, the 3 DT shows I have seen are the best of the lot.
The other bands were the first time I have seen any of them live - so they all had a fair start to impress!
I wouldnt in a million years say that BTBAM and Opeth produce more complex music than DT... not that that matters, as you say. Maybe they do play more complex stuff on cd but they didnt have the balls to play it live which is where they differ from DT.

Maybe I can get on board with your wine talk if I am sitting down to listen to a new album... me, the couch and the sound system, as you say right mood and time etc. But in a live sense you just have to throw that wine down your neck and see if it kicks your butt!

Re: If you are into Opeth, Tool, Dream Theater

I was trying to get out what it was that did the blowing and can see where you are coming from. I often feel like this when going to see bands that should be technically proficient and exciting only to find that I cant hear half the stuff they are playing and their communication is poor.........in many ways it would be better to see Take That.

I went to see APC a few years back, not because I liked them (infact I disliked Tool back then). It was one of those free ticket occassions and nothing better to do.

Expected nothing and was a convet by the time the first song was over.
