Steel Panther

Anyone heard these guys? They are the Spinal Tap of the Hair metal generation, so anyone remembering Motley Crue, Skid Row, Winger, Bon Jovi, et al will recognise the music style and the lyrics are just comedy.

Yeah I know who they are! Saw them at download festival this year. The lyrics are comedy!

I'd recommend a listen just for amusement

Re: Steel Panther

Bought their CD last week, and it is a blast. The lyrics had me in stitches, but the other good thing about this disc is that they can really play.

I love Rock, but it can be up it's own bottom sometimes, and this band is breath of fresh air.

Won't be playing it to the Vicar though.

Re: Steel Panther

I had a listen to snippets on amazon, and although its funny, although the album is cheap I just wouldn't buy it! Its just a joke band really....a bit like Bad News back in the 80's. ....or am I missing something?

Spinal Tap the movie was great, but why would you buy the CD? I loved 80's metal, call it glam, hair metal...whatever, there was some great stuff and a lot of those bands are making a mini-comeback / revival.

Re: Steel Panther

I know what you're saying, but for me it does have replay value, as mj says, the guys can play and obviously have an affection for the original material. Going through the album you can hear each band they're parodying, even a great "More than Words" moment appears.

It ain't gonna win any awards, but I've already listened to it more than some serious albums, but then I guess I'm target audience as I listened to the original bands in my youth.

No I don't own anything by Tenacious D.

When you listen to music, do you listen for the song, the musicianship, the emotion it generates etc? I don't necessarily listen for the comic value! Personally I enjoy comic albums, but I'm not sure if it has a real replay value? I should give it a chance I suppose. If the songs and music are good (i.e. strong melodies etc) then perhaps its worth a spin!

They are hilarious, saw them at download and also before that too, at the gig before they stopped half way through a song for the guitarist to touch up his eyeliner

Oh dear, Just listened to their new offering Balls Out. I couldn't resist, more of the same, but still funny and still an excellent nod to hair metal bands. Just Like Tiger Woods, class

looking back over my comments in this thread I've certainly changed my mind !! It was only after seeing them at Donnigton did I really "get" them!! They were brilliant and the songs are funny but also catchy and competent. I bought "feel the steel" on the back of Donnington and I've even got tickets to see them with Motley Crue (not bothered with def Leppard) in sheffield.

I've not heard the new album yet, but some suggest the formula / joke is wearing thin - is this true?

I've only give it one spin so far, it is more of the same and the humour doesn't stray far from, well, you know

The songs are still competent and you can pick up on the individual bands they are going after with each song. This is what I liked about the first, it'll need a couple more listens though, but first impressions, good album, but yeah, there's only so many jokes you can hear, or are there?

Edit: I would liked to have gone to see them, but wasn't gonna fork out the asking price to see Motley Crue and Def Leppard again, if they do a smaller gig, I'll try and get tickets.

I don't know. I would say the joke wore thin after a few listens of the first album. The new one is pretty much the same, but a little worse. It would be nice if they wrote an album with slightly less ridiculous lyrics. I know it's a key part of their appeal, but I reckon they could write a great album if they really tried.

Yeah, I thought this, but then I don't think they'd get the exposure. I certainly don't think there's another album in this particular vain. I wouldn't be surprised if they did grunge, rap metal or emo next. Would be interesting if they could pull one of those off without being too weird Al, i doubt it mind..

Cheers guys, I'll see what the show is like in december and I may buy the album after that ! I have listened to the 1st album quite a lot as the hooks in the songs are great....I've even converted a fair few in the office to them, despite them not being metal fans...I think they like the smutty humour !

I think £45 for 2 bands like Def Leppard & Mötley Crüe is actually pretty good these days, considering you are asked to pay around that for a mainstream act on their own.

I had never heard of Steel Panther before the upcoming tour, but having researched them on youtube, i am looking forward to seeing them just as much as my all time top 2 bands.
Ok....probably nothing is ever gonna top The Crüe, especially when Tommy keeps coming up with more wild drum kits.

Of the many Steel Panther videos on youtube, here is the very first one i looked at, then the second and my favourite. Speaking of the second video, this is one of the very rare times that i watched a 9 minute + youtube video without fast forwarding at some point.
I think Steel Panther are superb, even if 3 of the 4 members wear wigs.
I will be at Glasgow SECC on Dec. 9th.

Face value is £45 + booking fee.
I paid a £5.40 booking fee(rip off ) + £2.05 postage, making a total of £102.85 for 2 tickets.

That's odd, it was over 60 quid plus booking when it was first announced. Even so, £50 just to see the support is too much for me. I agree decent price for all 3, but I've seen cru and leppard before and they're not top of my see again list. Despite enjoying cru when I saw them last.

Its a large arena tour, so i wouldnt think the price would vary that much from venue to venue.
It looks like you were being ripped off.
Tickets for Glasgow(10,000 capacity)are a flat rate of £45 face value for standing or seated.

Yep, or I read the wrong price at the time and that stuck in my head. I know a mate of mines going and he sometimes has a free ticket when it comes nearer the date. I remember a couple of years back getting a call when I was at a works meal from him saying do I want to meet up at Tenacious D gig, I skipped pudding and had a great night

No ticket prices announced as yet(that i can see), but will be interesting to see how much they will be.
Surely has to be at least half the price of the Lep/Crüe tour wouldnt you think?
So that should be around £22.50 + booking fee.

I bought Feel the Steel last week, and have to say im really impressed, not to mention amused by it.

They go onsale at 9am

Edit:

£18.75 plus p&p, 2 tickets booked just over 20 quid each, bargain!

I note the booking fee is now included in the main price before postage, lots better, although £3.25 to post tickets..

Seen Steel Panther last night in Glasgow and was super impressed by them.
As i said in an earlier post, i only bought Feel the Steel last week but the songs sounded so familiar when played live.
Michael Starr came down into the arena and watched Def Leppard's set from the mixing desk.
I would definitely go and see them again if the come back to Scotland.
