Lots of free programs, but I like to use itunes as it's a good library as well.

Re: mp3 converter,

If I want to cut a piece of music out of a track for a ringtone or just because I want a short piece of the track - I usually change to WAV and use the SOOND RECORDER option that comes with Windows as it only works on Wav files . Then I have to change the edited Wav file back to mp3 format.

If you guys have a better way please advise.

Please keep it Uba-Simple though

I use iTunes to do this.
in iTunes right click on the track --> get info
Select the options tab.
you can now set the start and finish time so that it just covers the section of music you want to use (you can use hundredths of a second to get it really accurate)., when done press ok
Try playing the track - you may need to tweak the start and finish times to get it spot on.

then to the top menu bar
edit --> preferences
select general tab
amend the 'import settings' to the format you want to create the new file in.

When done, right click on the track again, and select create AAC/mp3 version (whatever import settings you have chosen).

Bingo!

you now have a new file just containing the bit you are interested in - you can pick this up from your the folder on the pc where your iTunes library is.

now reset the original track back to play the full length - just set the start and end time to be 0 - this puts it back to the default.
also remember to put your import preferences back to how you want them.

This technique can also be used to split out or remove the 'bonus' track you often find on the end of a CD.

Mate you need a WAV Editor, you just load up your WAV or MP3 file and it let's you chop out the bits you need and you can then save back into either format. Also lets you do fade-ins and outs to make it sound a bit better. The one I mainly use is a freeware one called Wavepad, you can download the basic version for free using this link-http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html

Re: mp3 converter,

Hi and welcome me to these wonderful forums.

I strongly recommend the latest version of dBpowerAmp for a simple reason. It is not freeware, but unlike foobar, is a neat, stand alone application that comes buddle with the latest Lame codec, so you wouldn´t worry about installing extra things. It is simple to use.

You will probably, also need the mp4 decoder for the job, but you can download it easily from official site at http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-m4a.htm

I mainly use the program to convert .ape and .flac files.
I use CueSpliter by medieval (freeware app) with .cue files in order split larger files into smaller files and then convert them into MP3 using dBpowerAmp. I also tried NERO, but I noticed serious leak in the timing of the files. The most accurate and best program for splitting files is CueSpliter by medieval, and it is freeware as well.
