sixteen horsepower ?

A friend of mine has been visiting his pal in Sweden that has a record shop. It's pretty alternative and stocks everything that the Swedish generally hate - wonder how he stays in business ?- must be a sort of Swedish subculture that only come out when no one is watching.

Anyway I digress. He asked the owner what he thought was interesting at which point he dragged out a band called Sixteen Horsepower (apparent reference to sixteen horses used to pull coffins at funerals).

This is weird stuff, sort of Johnny Cash meets King crimson (I kid you not) It has a worn, old quality that is similar to Nick Cave and then suddenly hits this progressive streak (not the classical stylee, much more the tougher guitar music of Crimson).

I think there is definitely something new in the fusion of the two styles. The Meat Puppets and Giant Sand did something similar but more rock/country meets prog. This is pure country in the old fashioned sense.
