Vibrating disc

I've got a problem with the first disc from the Family Guy S7 DVD boxed set. Stick it in my player and there is a loud vibrating noise when it spins up and plays.

All the other discs are fine, and I've never had this with all my other hundreds (or more) discs.

Looking at the disc it looks a bit thinner than the other discs which may explain it.

Aside from getting it replaced, has anyone had this kind of thing before and know a DIY solution? I've tried sticking labels to the disc to try and add weight but it doesn't help.

Re: Vibrating disc

I don't think the thickness of the disc would effect it, it sounds as if the disc is slightly warped - probably undetectable to the human eye.

Not sure of a DIY fix, sorry.

Hopefully whoever you bought it from will be kind enough to just let you send back the disc in question instead of the whole set, I hate it when you have to do that for 1 defective disc.

Re: Vibrating disc

I have this problem with one of my James Bond disks, the first 3 chapters make a strange vibrating sound then it's fine for the rest of the disk

Re: Vibrating disc

I had the same problem with several discs on a denon 3910 but they play fine in other players. Don't know why though!

Re: Vibrating disc

My name is Earl, series 3, disc three - all the way through, varying degrees of vibration, soft to violent. Call me paranoid but I think it may have broken my DVD player as I can now hear/feel vibrating on a good number of discs that never vibrated before.

Looking at it, I can't see any warping, but as you say it may be undetectable.

It does seem significantly thinner though. Looks like one of the two plastic layers is quite thin. It's like it's a manufacturing defect.

Slight hassle is it was a gift so harder to sort out replacing it. If I can get the receipt I'll give it a go, or maybe I can just pop into somewhere like HMV and say I don't have the receipt, and ask if I exchange it for the same set.

Have you tried playing it through your PC at all and if so was it the same ?

Re: Vibrating disc

Not yet. Will give it a go. Or I could dig out the old Sony player.

Update: No problems with the PC drive. Seems player specific then.

However I've run past the start of the disc and actually played some episodes and of course no vibration! D'oh! Seems it only occurs on some parts of the disc.
