Recommend me a recent Good Thriller

I am fed up with over the top bang bang loads of gore and ten thousand explosion films.

I want to go back to the day, where the acting and atmosphere were essential, not 'lets kill a person in the most goriest way and forget the storyline' flick.

So after my rant. can anyone recommend a good atmospheric thriller released inn the past year or so, where I can sit down and bite my nails to my knuckles and feel 'yeah that was satisfying'

An indication of films I like in this range go from Hitchcock, Truffaut Christopher Nolan etc.

So inspire me....or am I asking for too much???

Re: Recommend me a recent Good Thriller

Thanks for the suggestions. It seems from the response, this genre and style of filmmaking is very limited. maybe a sign of the times??

Re: Recommend me a recent Good Thriller

There also have been a few good thrillers from Europe over the last few years, especially from France. Tell No One is one of my favourite films of the last few years. It feels like a 50s Hitchcock thriller updated for contemporary times (hints of Vertigo and North by Northwest there). Read My Lips from 2002 is one of my top three films of the decade and is both a gripping thriller and a fantastic character study.

I also really liked the Spanish The Night of the Sunflowers.

Another two recent films I thought were good thrillers are Fincher's Zodiac and Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. The Machinist is a bit older and verges on horror, but it's one of the most atmospheric thrillers of the decade.

Re: Recommend me a recent Good Thriller

Eden Lake is...thoughtful horror. Not brilliant, but okay.

Changeling was a drama, but tense at times.

I'd agree on Eastern Promises, and I'd add the earlier A History of Violence.

From a few years back now, if you haven't seen Identity it's a treat.

Not really what you've asked for, but there or thereabouts. All of the above are at least worth a watch.

Re: Recommend me a recent Good Thriller

Eastern Promises certainly got my attention,a few times now.
not a thriller as such but,I cant think of a real thriller out for yonks.
perhaps no coutry but many people want a clean thriller whereas no country is a well ......youd have to watch it I spose.........

I like these three, not sure I would class Eastern Promise as a "Thriller", but an excellent movie.

Re: Recommend me a recent Good Thriller

I not sure of how much use quibbling about whether something fits a genre is when discussing a good film, but Eastern Promises deals with criminals, victims, murder, violence, peril, suspense, plot twists and the investigation of crimes, which makes it enough of a thriller for me.
