Yup, apparently that's a satellite falling to earth. They go and get that, and that's how they awake the monster.

That's not an Easter Egg, it's an observation.

One of my mates is a Cloverfield nut and has done all them clue finding websites plus reading lots of interviews etc on the internet.
He's also thinks there's actually two monsters in the film, and the main guy who's leaving (his name escapes me) just happens to work for the Japanese company that are tracking down the satellite.
Rumours about of a sequel, maybe involving the guy filming from the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, and his perspective of the events.
That's just what I can remember, but there is a lot more to the background stuff that meets the eye.

Re: cloverfeild easter egg?
Did anyone else spot the brief shot from King Kong that flashes up near the end of the film? Must only be a frame or two. Managed to pause at the exact frame on the Blu-ray. Cool wee easter egg

There are rumours that there were two monsters, but nothing can be proven either way. Seeing the 'evidence' on YouTube, i'm not convinced. And anyway, i believe the director has stated there is only one monster. If there was two, two would've been picked up in news reports and reported on the TV during the movie.

Another possibility was telling the story from the point of view of the Army. There's bucketloads of stuff on the net which anyone can find if they search for a few minutes. Mostly crap, but some good stuff there.
