Lack of DOLBY TRUE HD /DTS-HD 7.1 Soundtracks?

Many of us now are buying 7.1 receivers capable of decoding all the latest HD formats. Embracing the new High Definition era I decided to go for a 7.1 set-up in my lounge so I'll be future proofed (and so that it will sound the business).

The problem is there is a real lack of 7.1 HD audio soundtracks to blu-ray. I realised that all the early releases would be in 5.1 but was hoping by now we'd be seeing more and more 7.1 tracks. Especially the latest releases, such as The Dark Kinght etc.

The only one's I've found so far with DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 soundtracks are The Golden Compass and Dark City!

I've also been scouring the internet to see if there is a list of blu-rays that are in the 7.1 format.... My search has drawn a blank so far!

Does anyone know of any other blu-rays which supports 7.1 or if there is a list out there? .... Perhaps we could start one?

'Hairspray'.. 'Lust caution' to name a couple.

I'm fairly sure 'wall e' isn't 6.1 not on my region b disc it isn't.

Didn't search hard enough. Lots and lots of DTS Master discs.

It's been widely reported that whilst Wall:e is claimed on the packaging to be 5.1, it is in fact 6.1.

Ok let's put this another way and take this as read, on my menu for the uk wall e blu ray it gives you the option DTS 5.1 when the film plays and i go to the display function on my PS3 it tells me it is DTS HD MA 5.1! Ok so i take the disc and try it on my Sony BDPS 550 and low and behold it is DTS 5.1.

So i would say that the wide reporting is wrong atleast on the UK disc.

most those titles didn't seem to light my fire!

All I'm wishing for is more mainstream movies with 7.1 as well. What about the dark knight, iron man, transformers, harry potters....not too much to ask?

Well, those are Warners and Paramount,if you drop em' a line i'm sure they'll help you out.

Warners are still releasing lossy tracks on recent films for christ sake. And you want 7.1 tracks from them. There's nothing stopping them releasing such discs, they just come across as lazy, greedy double dip merchants

Mi-casa did the remixing for several recent 7.1 discs. They seem to be in a minority.

Re: Lack of DOLBY TRUE HD /DTS-HD 7.1 Soundtracks?

Many thanks for all the replies. Especially the link to that website with all the 7.1 titles. I do agree though that there are not many titles that float my boat!

Prince Caspian arrived today which is 7.1 so I'll look forward to watching that. I was so expectant that The Dark Knight, Ironman and all the new big budget movies would be 7.1! Even Tropic Thunder is coming out in 5.1.

I wouldn't mind so much however due to the rear surrounds being redundant on 5.1 soundtracks I really lose out on the whole "surround sound experience". Mainly due to the sofa is located next to the middle speakers (which become the rear surrounds on 5.1 soundtracks). I find myself swithing to the standard Doldy Digital soundtracks instead as my Onkyo receiver automatically converts them to Dolby Digital EX (7.1).

Nevermind, hopefully more 7.1 releases will come out soon!

From the AVForums review

There has already been some confusion over this release. Early copies seem to have had mistaken details on the pack stating that the disc only contained a DD 5.1 track. Officially, the BD was supposed to have a DTS-MA 6.1 audio, though many people have claimed that their systems were not showing this. Thus, it seems that the track was a DTS HD Master ES Matrixed 6.1 track, with the sixth channel modulated into the rear surrounds. However, the two copies that I have played (mine arrived late, but I had already borrowed one from a friend to give the once-over) both stated DTS-MA 5.1 on the packaging and, more importantly, played as such on my US PS3 and Onkyo 875.

So I guess it probably is only 5.1.

As for Wall.e,during playback i pressed the info button on the ps3 and it clearly stated a 6.1 track was being played.Didn't think to look at my amp to see what was being displayed though

Re: Lack of DOLBY TRUE HD /DTS-HD 7.1 Soundtracks?

I know this thread is referring to 7.1 soundtracks, but can anybody shed light on why some new release blurays only having DD 5.1 soundtracks, rather than trueHD or DTS? Is it down to the directors choice of how he made the film or the film company?

Watched 'Thick as Thieves' the other night and was really underwhelmed with the dd 5.1. I can understand some older films being restricted to how much they can remaster the original soundtrack, like Full Metal Jacket for example. But new releases?

Am I missing something, is it still HD? If not then the 'beyond high definition' statement on the case is a bit off . I'd try to avoid buying any blurays without a high def soundtrack, especially if a year down the line they are rereleased with improved audio
