Good kids movies to watch

Hello all

My friends son is in hospital atm and he has a laptop to watch some movies on, I'm going to be taking some down at the weekend for him but can't think of that many of the top of my head, any recommendations?

Currently have these atm:

1. The Chronicles of Narnia 1&2
2. Kung Fu Panda
3. Wall-E
4. Ice Age 1&2
5. Enchanted
6. The Spiderwick Chronicles
8. The Wizard of Oz

Thanks

Re: Good kids movies to watch

1. Pretty much anything from Pixar except for Cars (their only dud in my opinion). Ratatouille is especially good.
2. All the Wallace and Gromit stuff.
3. ET The Extra-Terrestrial

It's up there with the rest, IMHO.

Re: Good kids movies to watch

I second that vote on Cars!

I brought the Blu-Ray for my Son (well, for me really but don't tell anyone that) for Christmas and I had never seen it before that, but seriously since then it pretty much gets a spin every (if not every other) day it's THAT good.
Disc quality aside, the characters are genius - they are extremely well realised and there isn't a voice actor trying to out do the other (even Owen Wilson who voices Lightning Mcqueen is spot on) unlike on some other films (Shrek comes to mind), even the supporting cast get alot of time to do their stuff. The jokes are great and the plot (although standard Pixar fluff) doesn't tire out over the duration. The opening and end race alone justifies buying it.
I had always heard that this was 'meant' to be their weakest film out of the lot and had always put off watching it but now I can't wait until Cars 2 (well, my Son can't wait - cough, cough)!

I saw Zavvi yesterday selling it for £9.99 on Standard Definitioon DVD plus an extra 25% off that if you are buying these on disc.

But then again, if you are unsure then maybe a rental instead.

Re: Good kids movies to watch

Don't get me wrong, Cars isn't terrible by any means, but in comparison to the rest of Pixar's output it is considerably lacking.

Yes, the opening and closing sequences are great, but I found the central portion of the film lethargic, and the supporting characters just a bit dull and not really all that funny. Just felt a bit off.

Perhaps Pixar is suffering slightly from its own success here, because if this film was from any other studio I might not have judged it so harshly. But I expect more from Pixar.

Haha - no its not - its the worse Pixar by far - the only one I haven't sat through from start to finish, even my lad gets bored of it. Tomscrace's comments are spot on!

Any way, my suggestions:

The Water Horse (nice kids movie)
Bridge to Teribithia (note this movie deals with death! Excellent though)
Goonies (if he's old enought)
Madagascar (The best non Pixar CGI cartoon)
Dinosaur (Disney CGI)

Re: Good kids movies to watch

Maybe sitting Cars side by side with other Pixar films it's just not cute enough or something. Maybe the underlining themes buried deep inside are more mature or on a different level not covered by the other one's. Maybe some people just won't get it at the end of the day because their tastes are not catered for. Sure every Pixar film needs to exceed the one before but if you want one 'other' than Cars to put down then I'll have to say 'The Incredibles' too.
Trouble is with these two films are simply that they attempt different things like tackling a racing car theme which could alienate the female audience or those guys who are just not into that or the comic book genre which brings it's own set of problems.

At the end of the day, let the kid decide whether he finds them enjoyable or just don't even bother at all. There are safer options, like Toy Story (yawn).

Re: Good kids movies to watch

How old is he? Does he have any favorite TV shows? DVDs of that would be good.

I second the vote for "The Incredibles" and add with slight reservation "Finding Nemo." (The beginning of Nemo is surprisingly dark for a kids movie.)

Shrek?

Harry Potter?

Ghostbusters?

Old enough to enjoy (and not get nightmares from) LoTR?

HTH,
hank
