N00b here, need help with Video software

Hi
why is it some movies that i download off utorrent dont work on my 80gb PS3? they play fine on the pc/laptop but some files play on the ps3 but without the audio and some files are unsupported data on ps3.
does anyone know of a good free program where i can convert avi/xvid/divx file types into MPEG or MPE2?
i would be very grateful if someone can point me in the right direction. cheers!!
