Exclamation Movie Downloads coming to Playstation 3

I thought i would post this here and get views from other Movie fans rather than just Gamers.

It's been announced (quietly) that SONY are going to launch a Movie Download store for the PS3 starting in the US this summer and arriving in Japn & Europe later in the year.

So far SONY pictures is the only definate supplier of the films (duh) but are in contact with all the other major studios about adding their films

There are rumours also that when you 'rent' (or buy if they offer that) that you will be able to copy the film to the PSP and watch where ever you go.The second rumour is that the service is only set to launch with SD films. At 1st i thought this was a bad move but the more i thought about it, it could be the right move

There are several reasons for this. The PS3 is of course a Blu-Ray player and for the best in HD entertainment, they believe the should leave HD films to the disc format.Overall cost of the movies are cheaper. Also things like most people having only 40GB HDD consoles and the PS network being slow as downloading as it is.

I'm interested to know if you guys would use the Service? Do you see the PSP copy ect a plus over what Microsoft offer on their Video Marketplace?

Personally i think that if all the films are in SD of DVD QUALITY (SD Movies on XBOX look worse than DVD) and have Dobly Digital 5.1 as standard then they're onto a winner

Re: Movie Downloads coming to Playstation 3

Funny but there were many who thought Microsoft was a big bad wolf for encouraging a format war as they wanted to sell us downloads.

Why don't Sony just concentrate on giving us blu-ray?

Not interested in them as if I want to watch a film in SD or HD I'll stick with PPV.

Considering how long it take the PS3 to download software updates, I won't be downloading any movies onto it. Life's too short.

I think there is a big hole with this. The problem is ISP's. Many won't tolerate the downloading of these titles. I think Sony need to get wise to this. I would like to see more important things such as trailers of films across the globe. Then it would be a better medium. There are a lot of seriously good Asian films which don't get the right exposure. It's very sad.

Re: Movie Downloads coming to Playstation 3

Unless it provides movies at Blu-ray quality then there is no point. But if they are at Blu-ray quality there is also no point.

The sad thing is that given the limitations of downloading, and the limited HDD size (unless you upgrade) a disc is always the best option. So although it sounds a great idea to just select a film from your sofa and your away, it is actually tedious.

Re: Movie Downloads coming to Playstation 3

Considering how many promisses Sony make and how little they actually deliver, I'll put this one in the I'll check it out when/if it actually happens file...

Along with GT4, Home, In game messaging etc, TV play/record thingy.. all announced with a flourish and still not materialised. And why when MS have been 'renting' movies on the Xbox LIVE both in SD and HD for months now in the UK are Sony yet again, delaying the EU versions with no fixed dates yet.. Bit like the SixAxis controllers which are no longer avaliable outside the EU as they all have the better Dual Shock controllers, because it seems they thought they could dump all their stock in the EU and so long as Dual Shock arn't avaliable flog them to the unsuspecting..

IMO a announcement from Sony about what may be in store (pardon the pun ) for the PS3 is no longer at all believable, what so ever.. they might as well promise it'll soon do my ironing!

Re: Movie Downloads coming to Playstation 3

If I want low quality movies then I'l get them off torrents

If I want to watch a film and actually enjoy it then il get a dvd or blu-ray. Sorry but I hate downloading videos, and will never pay to download poorly encoded music.

Re: Movie Downloads coming to Playstation 3

THe whole downloading thing is not worthwhile in my opinion. I tried it using the 360 marketplace, and the length of time to download / the bugs and the picture quality is not worth the hassle. If you want a movie rent the bluray, or if you really want it then buy it.
Not until we have supersonic download speeds and complete reliability and bluray picture quality I wont bother.
Some may try it at first, but trust me, the novelty will soon pass

GT4 was released a few years ago & GT5P was released several months ago, in game messaging is available in the latest update and TV Play/record isnt strictly to do with the PS3 side of Sony so please try some perspective (and even then its being relieased imminently)

surely any progression is good and its for free (of course its going to be easier for MS they charge for the access)

I would have liked HD downloads, but then I have a 20MB line, Im sure for alot of people it would be tedious to download a huge file that they may only watch once. I say its a good choice when it comes (if it is only Sony titles why not give punters a choice about HD/SD version )

Added features for free are always welcome (even if some dont use it)

OK, I obviously meant GT5 not GT4 or the £30 GTP Demo (prologue)

Just as a heads up when I say I'll believe it when it happens, I am refering to the in game XMB that should allow you to playback your own music while playing games, however unfortunately it's dependant on the game developer allowing this... Last time I checked on the PS3 I was unable to invite friends to a game without quiting out of the game... And the PSP remote play didn;t actually allow you to play any games..?!?! The Xbox seems to have a global system that works with all games and IMHO works very well. I have had a PS1 and PS2 and am no MS fan, having to use MS software at work , but I honestly feel the Xbox360 has software far in advance of anything Sony can offer on the PS3 and likely always will, it's MS's strength, just like the PS3 seems more reliable and better built, that's Sony's strength.

However as I said I'll believe it when it happens... The latest Sony update (2.40) appears to have broken a lot of PS3's requiring the owners to take out their HDD and re-format it using a PC and loosing all their saved games or sending it off to Sony for repair at $150... Sony have now withdrawn the latest update and are investigating.. Dunno why? but as I said, I'll believe it when it happens.

Sony:
Quote:
“We are aware of a number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update. In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
