ripping blu ray
Hi all,
I've got some blu rays and I am considering ripping them (along with my SD films) to a hard drive. Now, sd films are easy enough to rip, but how easy is it to rip blu rays and are there any drawbacks? And which program do you use?
I know playing them through my ps3 is a no-no as it won't play any files larger than 4gig, which is a shame..
thanks all
Neil

Re: ripping blu ray
I think the legality of your post will be questioned. So please be careful.

Re: ripping blu ray
is it illigal to copy discs you already own? I thought it was fine to make back-up copies that you have purchased...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but 'backing up' is frowned upon by the distributors, and it is in fact illegal. I do think they need to change this though. After all, they have changed/in the process of changing the laws of backing up music cd's, so why not films?

Re: ripping blu ray
to be completely honest, I was under the impression that you could make backups of things you bought, be it programs or cd's etc. I thought it was decided fairly recently, but I could be wrong. If it is illigal then feel free to delete this thread or leave it up as a warning, but I do genuinely think you can make a backup up of material you have purchased.

Re: ripping blu ray
What you are talking about in Managed Copy which is completely different from ripping. Please try to post in doom9 forums for a definitive reply.

Re: ripping blu ray
A few points:
1 - No one has ever been prosecuted, nor has anyone ever attempted to prosecute anyone for making one back up copy for themselves;
2 - The BPI has actually asked the government to look into a slight change in the wording of the law so that music can be copied once by a person for their own backup/use on an i-pod, etc;
3 - I doubt you could find a jury of 12 people in the UK who'd convict anyone for having a HDD full of films/music they owned.
4 - Whilst UK law does tend to be interprated as banning any copying, personal use is not specified as illegal, and human rights legislation (which takes precedence over all other laws anyway) almost certainly means personal use of something you've paid for is a human right.
5 - If discussion of this is banned, then all forums which discuss CD burners, MD burners, i-pods, mp3 & WMA, FLAC etc, should be closed immediately - they are no different and are covered by exactly the same clauses in exactly the same laws, and are no more or less likely to encourage breaking those laws. In law there's absolutely no difference whatsoever between ripping a CD to your HDD and ripping your BDs to a HDD. Indeed, if you also have a programme on your PC capable of, and designed for, transferring music from your HDD to another device, such as a CD burner or i-pod, you are more likely to use that to break the law than a PC without a BD burner, or a programme capable of downscaling HD to SD and burning onto a DVD-R.

Re: ripping blu ray
Yeah,but you and i dont own the forum,and they're pretty strict when it comes to discussing these sort of topics.

Re: ripping blu ray
but as Steve says, if it's ok to discuss things as basic as ipods, which it's sole function is to play the copied (backed up) music that you have bought, why isn't this exactly the same as copying (backing up) a film that I own?
I think perhaps we need to have a discussion on this subject that includes the owners and moderators because it seems a bit of a strange one that we have dedicated forums to deal with ipods etc, but I'm not allowed to talk about copying films that I own. If the law is the same for both, why are we not allowed to cover both mediums??
I'm not trying to start a fight with anyone, I would just like to have a sensible debate on the subject..

Re: ripping blu ray
Yeah,nothing wrong with healthy discussion,but persuading the owner and the mods to let us discuss it,is another matter

Re: ripping blu ray
I dont think ripping software is the problem,the op specifically asked what program could be used to rip a disc,that is definately a taboo subject

Re: ripping blu ray
but why exactly is it taboo to ask what program to use to rip a film disc?
People discuss Nero or even Itunes to rip their music from a disc to put onto their ipods.. Maybe I'm missing something here, but to me, copying/ripping music and putting it onto another device is surely exactly the same as doing it with films. So I really don't understand why are we not allowed to talk about doing it with films, but we have forums discussing how to do it with music??
someone, please..please...explain to me what the difference is....
