Smile Toshiba to return to HD-DVD, Fox to jump ship from Blu-ray

Some news I just found! Amazing news for HD-DVD owners.

"In a startling development, Toshiba executives have reversed their decision to stop supporting the HD-DVD format. Head of HD-DVD development, Toshiko Nakamura said today, 'we have assessed the High Definition market over the previous weeks and the massively increased sales of HD-DVD media has created a rethink of our HD-DVD strategy. Together with the news that we have today signed an exclusive agreement with Fox to exclusively release their films on our HD-DVD format, we hope this heralds a new era in the high definition market' Toshiko also went on to say that Toshiba will be releasing a batch of new players that will also offer playback of the Blu-ray format.

I think this is amazing news from what was unfortunately a dieing format.

Some links for the blu-ray doubters:
Toshiba to return to HD-DVD
Fox to abandon Blu-ray
HD-DVD to return?

Re: Toshiba to return to HD-DVD, Fox to jump ship from Blu-ray

This is great news for HDDVD lovers and supporters of region-free viewing. I did actually get "wind" of this from an industry insider and friend at Bristol in February, but was sworn to secrecy until the official announcement.

Re: Toshiba to return to HD-DVD, Fox to jump ship from Blu-ray

I had been tempted to buy a HD DVD player from Amazon as they were so cheap. With this news I'm going to get one before the prices go up.

Just need to decide if it's better to get the 30 or 35. I could do with the 35 but am not sure if it's worth the extra £150.

The Left-Handed Whopper
In 1998 Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

Re: Toshiba to return to HD-DVD, Fox to jump ship from Blu-ray

I really hope this is true as I can use it as ammunition in my defence against my son's incessant "10 really good reasons why we should buy a PS3 Dad" campaign... It's getting a bit wearing now, as it's been going on non stop since Christmas and my major defence was always that we would do nothing until the formats sorted themselves out.

Fantastic, but I hate to rain on your parade, but I have good sources telling me 'Betamax' is going to be the HD format of choice, with Sony expecting to announce their withdrawl from blu-ray in a few days.

Betamax had a strong start but now seems to be trailing off, still looking forward to LOTR released in full HD Betamax......
