I am not sure if the US releases differed from the UK releases, but here are the specs on the both the US Blu-ray and US HD-DVD versions
HD-DVD:
Technical Specs
* HD DVD/DVD
* HD-30 Dual-Layer Discs/DVD-9 Dual-Layer Discs
* Five-Disc Set
Video Resolution/Codec
* 1080p/VC-1
* 480p/i/MPEG-2 (Supplements Only)
Aspect Ratio(s)
* 2.40:1
Audio Formats
* English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround (48kHz/16-bit)
* English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround (640kbps)
* French Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround (640kbps)
For the Blu-ray version:
Technical Specs
* Blu-ray/DVD
* BD-50 Dual-Layer Discs/DVD-9 Dual-Layer Discs
* Five-Disc Set
Video Resolution/Codec
* 1080p/VC-1
* 480p/i/MPEG-2 (Supplements Only)
Aspect Ratio(s)
* 2.40:1
Audio Formats
* English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround (48kHz/16-bit)
* English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround (640kbps)
* French Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround (640kbps)
They look the same to me - both have Dolby TrueHD.

So, to answer your question...No, you wont get any better sound by getting the HD-DVD version.

On both HD-DVD and Blu-ray the new cut of Blade Runner has a TrueHD track but the 4 other cuts on HD-DVD have DD+ tracks whereas the same 4 cuts on Blu-ray only have DD.

yes i knew the final cut had dolby true hd thanks
i was refering to the other discs
the thing is, does anyone actually know what bit rate is the DD PLUS track
i think its like 1.5mb minimum!!!
the thing that people are confused with is that via digital/optical output it down samples to DD at max bit rate of 640kbps...
same if you chose true HD, you will only "get" 640kbps in to your decoder...
anyways i just thought there was a real way of knowing how to see what bit rate the hd dvd versions is.#
furthermore i would add that if you have a XA1 or A1 hd dvd player it will be 24bit DTS at 1.5mb output from the digital coax!!!
so that converts DD pluss and true HD to 24 bit DTS!!

*Sigh* Universal are known for their 1.5mbps DD+ encodes, but Warners have persisted with low bitrate DD+ encodes and have never (to my knowledge) gone beyond 640kbps. Do a search for a few reviews from American sites (I would link to some but they'd be removed by the mods) and ye shall soon see the light.

All Warner titles on HD DVD with DD+ are encoded @640 Kbps and NOT 1.5 Mbps.
