Re: Paramount turns BLU !

Good news in the long haul but this doesn'tsound very promising:-

"we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

Does this mean they will sit it out for a time?

Re: Paramount turns BLU !

Paramount have always given superior treatment to HD DVD (AVC/VC-1/DD+ @1.5 Mbps) than Blu-ray (MPEG-2/DD @640 Kbps). I hope that they will break this trend and follow the footsteps of Sony and BVHE.

I read somewhere that Paramount had a deal with Tosshiba to use their AVC encoder, if so then they would probably continue using it. Flags of our Fathers was AVC on BD (US version).

Re: Paramount turns BLU !

Yeah but they didn't include lossless/uncompressed audio forcing fans of the movie to import the VC-1 encoded U.K/E.U version released by Warner.

I suppose it means they'll only be releasing the sort of films they believe will sell well on Blu-ray.

Re: Paramount turns BLU !

Aye, they already stated why they didn't particularly enjoy authoring for BD when they made the switch to HD-DVd.

Re: Paramount turns BLU !

Paramount are in a difficult position as their the only studio really to be really negative about one format or another in detail.

Uni always just said they preferred HD-DVD. They even went on the record saying that both the HD-DVD PRG and BDA needed to do more for HD adoption, this was an obvious softening in their stance even a month ago.

Warners fobbed us off with the need for mass adoption, they never really had a pop at HD-DVD.

Paramount however went on the record with alot of negative stuff about the BD encoding process. Therefore it's going to be harder for them to go back to those very same encoders with a smile on their faces. I think eventually they will naturally be fully blu, but i think it'll take them more time than universal. I don't expect them to make a song and dance about going blu when they do.

Far be it from me to say - I'll leave that to Paramount to decide.

I imagine they will say how much better things are now. It was such a mess twelve months ago...

Re: Paramount turns BLU !

Glad they've finally made a statement but, with that quote, it's almost like they've forgotten they used to release on Blu-Ray before all the money started changing hands (from both sides).

They don't appear keen ..... but in reality it should be easier for them to release than Universal as they have prior experience.

Re: Paramount turns BLU !

If Warner did get the amount rumoured to go exclusive Paramount are a bit bitter they never got offered that much by Blu-ray.
