Hi,
Is anyone else put off buying blu-ray movies because off film grain?

I think you need to elaborate as to which films you have seen with 'grain'.

Personally the films I have seen on Blu-Ray didnt suffer from 'grain' unless of course you are taking about 300 but then its shot that way.

Apocalypto has film grain. But I feel this adds a certain amount of stylistic charm. Such as the way a vinyl crackles etc.

isn't grain an inherent aspect of film, and the way its shot? If that's how the film's supposed to look then I'm happy.....besides I think a certain element of grain makes the movie feel that little bit more "cinematic" when you're watching at home!

To me unobtrusive Film Grain is very important for faithful representation of the picture.

I like to watch films as intended. If the director made the film with grain then leave it there. The same thing with black bars etc.

Straight answer from me is NO.
Every single movie that I have watched on Blu-Ray or Hd-dvd, without exception, has been an improvement over the original in standard definition.
To me it really is a no-brainer that , if you have the choice (and finance),go for the high definition version every time.
I now have over 110 blu-rays and 90 hd-dvd's.

I know what the OP means. I have seen a fair few BD and the quality does vary. Some are sharp and crisp, others can have grain in them. I did wonder when we will see the best from this format like we have done with dvd. If I look back on my early dvd's you can quiet clearly see that they are not upto the standard of newer dvd's and grain is one reason amongst others. I think the same will apply to BD and HD DVD discs. Some transfers are amazing and others are poor and some are average and do have some grain to be seen. Maybe the higher res shows off the imperfections more, maybe the transfer isnt the best it could be, maybe it was shot that way from the beginning, who knows. It does play on my mind when ever I see a below par disc or a disc which doesn't blow me away like other discs can do. I have a feeling that the overall standard for BD or HD DVD disc on a whole will improve over the next few years, basically the same will happen to HD discs as it did to VHS and DVD retail products.

nope.

Like posted above, there are a few titles which do have this (300 / Miami Vice / Rocky Balboa (prefight) to name a few). This is how the director intended the film though. If you dont like it, then if you read the reviews it usually mentions if this is apparant. Films like Ratatouille / Transformers are probably your best bet.
Personally it doesn't bother me too much.

I dont no about grain but I watched the lady in the water ( i think thats what its called ) on blu ray !!

well the picture was the worst ive ever seen had to eject to check it was a blu disk twice !!(rented version ) but casino royale was good !!

put it down to early mpeg 2 !!??
put me off the blu disk

film was c..p !!

got XE1 only 1 film pic quality wise has not impressed me so far !!

Some examples of which titles you feel are below par would be interesting. I think a lot of it is down to personal opinions, for example, the new Jesse James Blu-Ray has been getting a very bad "press" on its PQ and AQ, but both IMHO are excellent, difficult to see how it could be significantly improved. But it's been said before that people who object to seeing film grain are not going to enjoy hi-definition discs unless their players or monitors have some kind of digital noise reduction option (which can ruin a picture).

Hmmm, the picture quality of Lady In The Water is not exactly great but it wasn't terrible. It was a touch too soft and washed in places though. There are certainly better transfers than that.

well put it this way ive seen better or equivalant on most of my upscaled r1 sd dvd films !! using denon 3910 /XE1 (the TANK ) connected to pioneer plas !!
