Re: old films blue ray !

Movies are shot on film which is then scanned to produce a digital version.

Film does not have a resolution as such but if you want to look at it in definition terms film has a much higher definition than 1920x1080.

Most movies today are still shot on film so it is no different with new movies or old movies.

Film stock can degrade over time and no doubt some of the older films have to be restored before transferring to digital media but in if they are in good condition they should give similar results to new movies

Re: old films Blu-ray !

Hi Anthony

Welcome to the forums. We have many different forums here catering for all the many and varied subjects. You orignally posted this in our DVD Bargains forum, this is normally where people would post about bargains they have found on DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-ray. So therefore I have moved your thread to the HD Movies forum where it is best suited.

Please feel free to have a look over all our forums as I'm sure you will find something of interest.

Thanks
Greg

Re: old films Blu-ray !

At one point they were talking about a Blu-Ray release for Metropolis. That was released in 1927.

All the best

Re: old films Blu-ray !

Some films shot in the 1950's even had six channel magnetic soundtracks e.g. Ben-Hur and of course were shot on 65mm + film stock so assuming an original copy in good condition survives these should look cool only limited by our 1920x1080 pixel displays.

Older movies I would like to see myself (already got the Searchers BTW) are

Ben-Hur (1959)
Around The World In 80 Days (1956)
Carousel (1956) - Both Camera Versions
Tommy (Quinphonic Sound)
White Christmas (first complete movie shot in VistaVision like The Searchers)
Gunfight At The O.K. Corral (also in VistaVision).
The Ten Commandments (VistaVision again)

For info on VistaVision see http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/wingvv1.htm

Re: old films Blu-ray !

for what its worth, The Searchers is a cracking restoration. It looks fantastic in HD.

Same with Robin Hood (even older!) and casablanca. Hoping those two will come out on bluray soon.
