Too many films in High Def

I've seen loads of threads complaining about the lack of releases in High DEf. In a recent one at AVS I posted the following reply. I thought it might be useful here, as we do get complaints about releases being a little thin in the ground.

Just so you know, before I go any further, I'm dual-format.

I have a 43" plasma in my living room and a HD73 projector in a cinema room.

I find that high def looks 'good' on the plasma, and 'wow' on the projector. So, I generally watch one high def film every week (usually a Friday night) on the projector.

Film I own but haven't watched yet (in high def, that is - I've seen some in SD):

I make that 41 films.

At one a week that takes me through until Friday the 29th of August next year.

Heaven knows how many great new/catalogue titles will be available by then.

If not, there are still quite a few films I've not got round to ordering yet, but which I could if there was a dry patch.

Oh dear, I'll have run out of films by Boxing Day 2008.

My problem isn't going to be a lack of films, but too many to watch in the time I have.

ps. After all that, I forgot about 300 (see my 'too expensive' thread). That's the rest of this year and all of 2008 dealt with. Let's hope they release something decent for me to watch between now and 2009.

I have to agree with you here steve

And i have the added frustration of having just moved, all my gear in boxs (and kit still being ordered) on the HD Movie front i also watch on average 1 Movie a week (2 or 3 some weeks - Sky HD Stuff also squeezed in) but with nearly 2 new arrivals each week the pile of Celophane wrapped un-watched items is now being bolstered up with Brown Giffy bags of 'Surprises' awaiting to be unleashed..... If there is anyone who can't find a movie to Watch or Buy i will be surprised to say the least.......

Not sure why you'd want Planet Terror or Death Proof in HD

Wait till you buy TV boxsets. I want to rewatch Heroes. I watched it all originally on the SciFi channel then I bought the box set. Next I want the BSG S1 as I never watched it first time round.

If you are dual format I estimate there's now something like 600-700 unique film titles with more coming out. There seems to be more extras on these disks than ever before too. I spent one night watching all the Blood Diamond stuff. Very interesting if you care about the message in the film.

Maybe so I don't get a lot of pixel/line structure, or upscaling artefacts? High def isn't all about having so much detail that you can count hairs.

Truth be told, the reviews have been mixed. So I'll probably have bought them anyway, but I'm not in any rush.

If they come out soon-ish on high def and cost only a few quid more than the SD versions, I'll be more than happy.

Replacing old films (or not) with high def versions is one thing. Nut buying pretty much everything that's new on high def is a bit of a no-brainer for me.

Not sure it matters with those two films. They deliberately shot them on poor film stock, and then spent hours damaging and scratching the film to give it that authentic "budget" movie feel of the exploitation flicks.

I have the HD buying bug too, but have to hold back as Christmas is coming... and I've been told I am not allowed to buy anymore until after then

I've been with my patrner for just over 2 years, after years of being a sad single bd.

I played a blinder. I continued buying for the first year or so just as I always had done.

Since going high def this year I've made lots of noise about cutting back, etc. Me Julie is well impressed. I shop around for deals more, and am a little more picky - not a bad bit of self-discipline, actually.

So instead of £20 DVDs being bought whenever I felt like it, I've come back to an everage of onw £14 film per week.

ah but just think how gd those scratches will look in HD lol

I think HD is saving me money in the long run. before i got HD i was spending a hell of a lot on movies but now with the price being so much more i find myself being very picky. i try to buy films i know i will watch over and over instead of buying it because its a classic

I'm 99% sure the versions on the DVDs/HD DVDs are sans scratches.

I wish I was pickier I swore I wouldn't buy so many, already up to 110 I sell alot more on once I've watched them now though....

not gd! im not to bad, i've had HD for 2 months and i've only bought 26 high def disks so far, just got to stop looking at these lovely offers that keep popping up lol

I counted up my total spend on HD films this year and the results really scared me - 219 films altogether (counting boxsets as 1 film). Quite stupid really. 2008 will really see me slow down as TBH I've been buying films based on a PQ and SQ basis, disregarding how much I might enjoy the content.

Some films still blow me away, such as 28 Weeks Later which I watched last night and loved, but I need to start picking and choosing rather than replacing my DVD collection.

Some back catalogue films have really stood out such as the Matrix Trilogy and as recently as Close Encounters, but on the whole I think only buying new releases is the way forward for me.

Please don't think I am arrogant saying this BTW. I am just obssessive.
